Is October a good time for San Fran?

We're starting to think about a 5 year anniversary trip in October.  DH threw out San Fran as an idea.  We are okay if it's not super warm.  I actually like traveling when it's chilly and I can dress in layers.

Any must see/do/eat things in San Fran you'd recommend?  Places to stay?

THANK YOU!!  :-)

eta:  I should add we're both architects so we love seeing great architecture as well as historic places.

Re: Is October a good time for San Fran?

  • It will be pretty chilly and possibly rainy or dreary, but I LOVE SF and think it would be a fun anniversary trip.  Definitely hit Ghiradelli for the best hot chocolate. I literally have dreams about a hot cup of the stuff.  Also getting some bread at the wharf or soup in a bread bowl.  We LOVE the Exploratorium, a hands on museum that shows how things work.  If you have time definitely go to the Tactile Dome.  It is really cool and DH and I enjoyed helping each other through the obstacles in pitch dark. It was really neat.

    Have fun!

  • September/October is actually the best time of the year in SF.

I am really confused by this comment.  September / October in SF is one of the best times of the year to visit, as we have an Indian Summer (generally).

The time you want to avoid SF is in the "summer", when the city itself is cold and socked in with fog.  You (historically) should get nice weather in October, and you should still be able to go up to Napa / Sonoma and find it to be quite enjoyable (I would highly recommend that trip as it's an easy day trip from the city).

OP - I live in SF and I love it.  If you need advice about restaurants, things to do, etc., feel free to PM me.  :)

  • Ditto rori and SFGirl.  September/October are the best months in San Francisco.  It rarely ever gets truly hot in the city anyway, and layers are always a good thing in S.F.

The see/do/eat list in San Francisco is long and varied.  I recommend staying in Union Square or Embarcadero areas, and if you must Fisherman's Wharf is also an option but it's a distant third to the other two areas.

Things to do: Alcatraz (get tix online in advance); Fisherman's Wharf; Lombard St.; get ice cream at Ghiradelli Square; drive across the GG Bridge and up to the Marin Headlands just on the other side for a great picture opportunity (these first four things are all in close proximity and can be done in a day); ride a cable car; shop on Union St. or in Union Square (two different areas); in Golden Gate Park check out the Japanese Tea Garden, de Young Museum, bison pen, Conservatory of Flowers, etc.; eat your way through the Ferry Building; go 45 minutes north to Muir Woods to see the redwoods; etc.

To eat: It's been a while since I lived in San Francisco so others will have newer restaurant recs for you.  Gary Danko is always highly recommended for a splurge meal.  A little less expensive is Roy's (Hawaiian fusion), House of Prime Rib, and Clementine (French).  Decidedly cheaper options are King of Thai Noodle, Lovejoy's Tea House, R&G Lounge (Chinese), and dim sum in Chinatown.

    Enjoy your trip!

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I was there last Oct and it was really warm- mid 80's and sunny.

This is wrong. September/October is actually the nicest weather of the year in SF - mid 70s or so, sometimes low 80s.

You will still need to wear layers, however, because of the microclimates in each neighborhood. And no matter how warm it is during the day, it will usually cool down to the mid/upper 60s once the evening sea breeze kicks in.
