shampooing twice/day?

I shower in the mornings. I have been going on runs in the evenings and definitely need a full shower/shampoo before getting in bed. Problem is, by morning my hair is super greasy again...HAVE to shampoo. I have very thin, very fine hair, and I'm worried that washing it so much will leave it totally lifeless.

Any suggestions on what type of shampoo I should/shouldn't use? I generally shy away from any conditioner at all because my hair is so oily to begin with, and it weighs my hair down, but I'm open to trying it. If it makes a difference in your answer, my hair is not colored and is pretty short (this is a fairly recent pic of me, although my hair is a little longer now):

Re: shampooing twice/day?

  • hmmm, that's tough. My best guess would be to use a sulfate-free shampoo. Washing your hair is like washing your face, the more you do it, the more it strips the natural oils out and causes your scalp to produce more. Vicious cycle ;)

I probably wouldn't shampoo at night. Just rinse. Water alone will be enough to get rid of the sweat and it's not like there would be that much grime in your hair that you'd really need shampoo. Then just wash and style in the mornings. That would at least save your hair 1/2 a bit...

I'm sure other posters will have better suggestions :)

ETA: for shampoo recs, I know the Trader Joe's tea tree oil stuff gets great reviews on here. I use Kiss My Face for DD1, but that's moisturizing for her curly hair. For you, I'd probably find a volumizing one. I use Purology Volumizing and the volume it gives is amazing!

  • I agree with pp.  If after your run, you're usually just hanging out around the house and going to bed,  I think it's hurting your hair to shampoo it then.  Just got to bed and wash in the morning.

For sulfate free shampoo, I like Everpure and AG (Ulta) best.  My hair got really greasy from Burts Bees and surprisingly Moroccan Oil Shampoo completely dried my hair out.  It was not worth the money.

ETA: there is a transition period with the amount of oil produced when changing hair wash frequency; maybe try minimizing the amount of washing, knowing you will have an adjustment time.

  • poor thing :-/ I wash mine twice a WEEK. I can't imagine twice a day.

  • I dont have your type of hair, but would a dry shampoo work for you in the morning? I've heard a ton of good things about them and might get the greasy look out of your hair. Washing your hair 2x a day isnt good for your hair and I would recommend skipping one if you can

  • Even if you have thin/fine hair, 2x/day is way too often!

Agree with PP that it's a vicious cycle of over-washing leading to producing excess oils. Purging is really important -- just try to push through the days that are gross and extend the time between washes. It'll be gross the first few times, but it will get better.

I started by going three days b/t shampoos, and it was seriously nasty but temporary. I can now pretty easily go three, even a fourth, though I don't go longer than that.

Dry shampoo or baby powder (or I even have used loose face powder in a pinch) will help the gross factor.

I also simply rinse my hair after working out on non-shampoo days. If I have the time, I also let the sweat dry and it really doesn't feel as gross (sounds gross, but I forget and realize my hair actually doesn't look bad) and I do really sweat.

  • Thanks ladies. I will start with keeping the morning shampoo and just rinsing with water after I run.

  • I like to skip washing my hair in the morning...I shower just to "wake-up" really.  I prefer to wash my hair after my workout in the late afternoon/evenings.

I posted recently about shampoos for oily hair.  I didn't get any recommendations, but decided to try Pantene's Aqua Light Shampoo & Conditioner(specifically for hair that feels weighed down).  I'm only on day 3 but like it so far.

  • What shampoo are you using? Stay away from Pantene and fructis. They are terrible. The are loaded with silicones which makes your hair oily.

I wash my hair twice a day if I work out. I have normal hair, thick and straight and I don't color it. The shampoos that work the best are Burt's Bee. I would suggest you buy some very natural shampoos and see if it makes a difference.

  • When I "wash" my hair twice a day because I worked out, I use a sulfate-free conditioner instead of shampoo.  It seems to get it clean, and I figure (perhaps wrongly?) that it is better for my hair because it is how no-poo method people wash their hair.
