I need some help please (PIP)

Hello! I'm new to this board and I could really use some advice. I've been searching all over the internet and I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for.

I want to make a flower bed against my back fence. I know I want it to follow the fence, curve a little, and incorporate the corner and a fig tree we have.

Where I need help is the steps it involves. I know I want to border the bed with creek stones. We already have them, and I spent the weekend bordering a bed we already had (around a tree) with them. For the existing bed, I dug a trench, put down paving base, compacted it, and laid down the stones. The bed is a little higher than the surrounding lawn, and the stone bases are a little lower than the surrounding lawn.

I want to do this same style with the bed along the back fence, but I'm unsure as to how to do it. The fence is the problem. Do I need to worry about the soil going under the fence into the neighbor's yard? There's a very small (1/2") gap under the fence in some places. Every time I try to look this up, I get results for retaining walls or raised beds, and that's not what I want to do at all.

Am I completely over thinking this? Do I just dig a trench Iike I did with the other bed and lay down the stones in the same fashion?

(I'm including pics of the bed that I just bordered for reference. The fence where I want to put the bed against is in the background. The lawn is much wider than this picture makes it look!)

  • I don't have any pictures, but our backyard flowerbed is against a fence. What we did was dig a trench as close to the fence as possible and attached a board (with screws) the height and length of the flowerbed within the trench. Off the top of my head, I don't remember what kind of board we used and it's been a few years.

Then we built the bed from stone and filled with dirt. The board isn't visible and it's keeping our dirt in the bed rather than our neighbor's lawn.

  • We had to attach the board for the entire length and height of our flowerbed because the dirt would've fell thru the slats. Its been at least 3 years and we haven't lost much dirt, if any.
