Let's talk contacts

For those that wear them, what type do you wear? What do you like/dislike about them?

I just went to the eye doc today and they are having me try a type that you can wear for up to 30 days (day & night). They sound like they would be good, in theory, but I guess only time will tell.

Re: Let's talk contacts

  • This is a good post, because you just reminded me that I needed to call my eye doctor and get my contacts renewed....

  • I've worn contacts for about 10 years now. I have bad allergies in the spring/summer, so some brands I've tried have been very uncomfortable. I worked in a optometrist's office for about 5 years and worked a ton with the contacts. I think I've tried just about every brand out there. Right now, I'm wearing Acuvue Advance and these have been my favorite so far. I usually wear them for about a month or less. I don't keep real accurate track of when to change them, just when I can't stand them anymore.

What brand did they put you in? Do you have astigmatism? This will usually change which contacts you can try.

  • I wear the Acuvue two week ones. They're ok.  I have noticed that by about hour 13-14 of wear, they get really dry and uncomfortable. But I do wear them longer than two weeks. I wear them until they get yucky, mostly because I'm cheap and lazy.

I used to wear day and night ones for 60 days and I loooved them, but they discontinued them and I switched eye doctors and she scolded me for wearing them in my sleep. I also wore the same 6 pairs for three years which apparently was also worth a scolding.

When I switched after mine were discontinued, they gave me three brands to try for two weeks each and then I just called in an order for the ones that I liked best after the trial time.  Is that an option for you?

It's the "Air Optix Day & Night" brand. I had never heard of them until I just asked if there were any type that were ok to wear to bed.

Hmmm...I never though to ask. If I don't like this type they gave me to try today, I think I'll ask them. I just hate having to constantly go back anytime I want to try a new brand/type.

Oh ok, I tried this brand for quite awhile. This would probably be a close second to the brand I'm wearing now. Good luck!

ETA: I didn't sleep in them though. I've never had good luck with sleeping in my contacts, even if they are the kind where you are supposed to be able to. They would still dry out and be uncomfortable.

  • I have been wearing acuvue oasys for several years. I really like them. I wore Acuvue 2 prior to the oasys and didn't like them because they dried my eyes out and I looked like I was constantly stoned (I wasn't!)

The idea of sleeping in my contacts is strange to me. I don't think I'd be a fan.

  • I am currently wearing the Air Optix and I HATE them! Like want to throw them out hate! I got them because I couldn't guarantee I would take my contacts off for sleep, and the doc recommended these over the Acuvue Oasis I used to wear because I could wear them longer without taking them off.

I had the trial for one week and thought they felt great, but shortly thereafter they started bothering me. Basically, I can wear them for, at most, a week without taking them off before they start getting cloudy and painful. Even with a brand-new pair. And when they get painful, it feels like I need to take them off right away or scratch my eye-type pain, rather than just bothersome.

I used to wear my Acuvue Oasis for several weeks without a break with no problem. With the Air Optix, I take the contacts off about every five days and spend a full day wearing my glasses (like today) to give my eyes a rest before having to put contacts on again.

They just don't agree with my eyes, but I have like four boxes left and a, too cheap to buy new ones. It might just be me though. I am guessing most people don't have trouble with them.

I'm not sure if it's my allergies or the material just doesn't agree with me. They have been irritating my eyes since I put them in yesterday. I think I'm going to give them another day and call the eye doc back and tell him that I need to try something else. I'm supposed to go back next week but I honestly do not know if I can wait that long.
