Just another race question

I will be running the Cooper River Bridge Run (10K) next Saturday.  Not only will this be my first 10K - it is the largest race I have ever seen - much less participate in!  It sold out at 43,000 runners!  I know most of you have large size races near you, but not me!  You have inspired me - but I also am scared to death! LOL  How did you get over the nerves and enjoy such a race?  Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. Embarrassed

Re: Just another race question

  • I actually prefer smaller races for the most part, but there are some positives to the huge ones.

First, you can pretty much guarantee that you'll never be running alone :)

Second, the energy from the runners and the crowd is a great motivator.  Having thousands of strangers cheer you on, and the comraderie with the other runners is a great experience.

Now on the bad side, because there are so many people, the course will be crowded, so you may not get your best time b/c you may have to dodge and weave around people for much of the race.

I would definitely try to get there early (at least an hour or more) because of the crowd.

Have fun, I've heard that's a nice race!

    DITTO to all of this.

  • Just have fun and don't worry about your time (it is hard to pass folks and you will run extra)
  • Make sure you get there early enough and are able to line up in the appropriate spot. That way you won't stress out and be frustrated by getting caught behind others that you'd like to pass (or alternately get in the way of faster runners). If you end up in the wrong place, don't waste a bunch of energy weaving all around right in the beginning. Pay attention so that you don't accidentally get tripped up in the crowd. Big races can be very well organized and if so, you shouldn't have any problems.

As for nerves in general, way back before I had done any races, I told my husband that I didn't think I'd ever be able to run one because I would be way too nervous. He said "You can't be nervous once you're running". I've found that to be true, so no matter how I feel in the minutes and hours before the race, I have it in my mind that once the gun goes off, I'll just "go to work" and the nerves will be gone. Somehow knowing that is the case is calming. I also think that the pre-race jitters can get you pumped up and thus you can use them to your advantage.

    Have a great race!

  • I have no advice, but Greenville is my hometown. Big Smile Love Greenville! I still have family there.
  • Sadlebred, who knew! I feel like the lone ranger on this board! Lol. It a great town and they have worked really hard to make it user friendly to us runners/cyclist! FWIW I love Atlanta! :)
