How do you break in shoes?

I am on my 3rd pair of new shoes this month. They hurt so bad! How do you get past the pain so they are finally comfortable? (The pain is mostly due to chaffing or pressure against my upper heel, causing blisters)

Re: How do you break in shoes?

  • First I wear them on days I know I'll be doing very little walking around or if I know they're going to be a PITA I'll just wear them around the house a few hours at a time.

Other options are the foot petals, bandaids or other heel protectors until the shoe conforms a bit more to your foot. Sorry about the sore feet. That sucks.

  • what kind of shoes are they?  Right now I'm trying to break in a pair of flats so I'm basically wearing them every day with socks on while I'm at home like slippers.  I did the same thing with my wedding heels, although it's slightly less practical when you're just hanging out at home and cleaning!

  • That sucks :(

For flats I have to literally bend them and push the backs down to loosen them up, because I get that upper heel blister problem too. I'll also sometimes take to a cobbler and have them stretch out the shoes for me for a couple days. Otherwise I use those stick on things in the back of the heel, and they work pretty well.

  • also, if you are talking about flats, maybe try out different brands next time, I never have to break in my Steve Madden ones
  • Yes, they have all been flats. Ironically the only ones that I haven't needed to break in are also Steve Madden.

I will try bending back and forth, and maybe wear them around the house with socks this weekend. That sounds better than suffering the rest of the week at work. Thanks!

  • If they are flats I usually just wear them around the house with socks on for awhile. That usually does the trick.
