How does one "get" TOMS, eventually?
I need to know this.
Is it like receiving enlightenment, but with shoe zen?
What made you finally "get" them? Wearing them?
Do Sperry's offer a similar "aha!" moment?
Clearly I'm not relating to my shoes enough.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
Re: How does one "get" TOMS, eventually?
I think Toms are butt-ugly and they remind me of Keds. My DH thinks they are "hot mom shoes" and has been wanting me to wear them since they first came out.
I just bought this pair because they are the first pair that I thought were even remotely cute. They are crochet and I think they will be comfy for hot sweaty pregnant feet in the summer.
Please let me know if Jesus or the Buddha appears to you when you wear them. TIA.

LOL!!!
I don't think they are nearly as bad as Birkenstocks or Doc Marten sandals.
I think it's more like conforming to if you don't like them originally.
Similarlly, I got my first pair of Uggs in 2005. My sister (2 years younger) said they were called Uggs bc they were Uggggly and now years later she's owned several pairs.
To me, shoes like Uggs, TOMs and Sperrys seem to be a staple for some and then once other people see them for a long enough time period, they decide the shoe isn't so bad. Just my two cents
(another example is Crocs; which I will NEVER conform too
)

NEVER! I am not into Uggs, TOMs or Sperry's and doubt I ever will.
I do wear Crocs around the house
but would NEVER wear them in public.

Maybe if they see how different people style them they "get" them.
Good answer! I like it.
I'm really curious, the OP is in the sperry's thread down there and I'm like... what does it mean?
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
I think it's like skinny jeans. After so much exposure, I became desensitized. I still own neither Toms nor skinnies, but I don't think they're hideous anymore. I just disagree with Tom's whole business model.
These, on the other hand, I will never understand. They're supposedly hipster shoes? Or were a couple years ago? WTF.
noooo
The crocheted ones are worse than the regular ones!
yeah, I've always disliked TOMS, and then a friend posted an article about it and it made me dislike them even more.

I refuse to wear Uggs no matter how comfy they are. As for TOMS, the standard ones are meh, Not great, but not nearly as hideous as Uggs. EXCEPT, the new ballet flats are adorable! I ordered a pair last month even though they won't be back in stock until mid April.
ETA: I do have to say, I think Crocs are adorable... on toddlers.
In all honesty? Glitter. I didn't really care for TOMS when they first came out. I didn't detest them like I do Crocs or Uggs, but they just didn't appeal to me. Then they came out with the glittery ones, and it was game over for me. I got my hands on a pair ASAP.
I'm a sucker for anything with glitter on it or sequins...its kind of a problem, lol.

I was at Nordstrom with my mom and randomly decided to try some on. They were so comfortable and I thought they looked pretty cute. My mom bought me 2 pairs for my birthday and now I'm addicted. I have those two, a pair of wedges, and a pair of the ballet flats.
However, for some reason I just can't get into the sparkly ones. It's probably because a lot of my students wear the sparkly ones so I see them as shoes for 9 year olds.
LOL! The sparkly ones are the reason I have TOMS at all. I'm 28, and my SIL, who has the same pair, is 24, lol. FWIW, I have the silver ones, and think the colored glittery ones (in pink and purple, etc) do have a bit of a younger feel, but the neutral sparkly ones are okay for all ages (silver, black, gray).

I am not sure but my guess is seeing someone who's style you like wearing them changes you over.
I live in a college town and around here college students are the only ones who wear them. Well, little girls at my DS's elementary school wear the glitter ones. No one in my circle is likely to show wearing Toms, so I don't have much chance of being converted, thank goodness.
LOL too funny. I honestly didn't know Toms were so hot until I came on this board. No one I know wears them.
Mean alert*
My sister caved and bought a pair of TOMs for recent traveling she's been doing for the comfort factor I asked her how she liked them and she said she stopped wearing them b/c everytime she wears she feels like she's homeless. (I live in a city with plenty of homeless and while I have seen a few wearing Uggs, I've never seen them wearing Toms)
