My DH and I will be moving about 4 hours away. We currently rent an 1200 ft apartment. When we move, we will be staying with my parents for a few months until we buy a house or find an apartment.
We were looking into PODS since they can store our furniture until we know where we are moving to next. I was wondering if anyone had experience using them? If not, what are your experiences with a long distance move?
We are fine doing most of the lifting/packing ourselves, we are hoping for help with the transporatation aspect of the move.
Re: Pods/Long distance move
I used a similar service through ABF for our move, their 'relocubes'. I preferred those over the pods as they were smaller in size and could fit into a parking spot, which made loading/unloading better for our case. They were also about 1K cheaper for our move across country.
It was great, they were very clean inside and had tie-downs every 2 ft. We fit our 1200 sq ft house into 4 cubes, although we didn't have huge furniture other than our sofas and beds. You can reserve more and only pay for what you end up using so that's something to keep in mind if you have a lot of big pieces.
The downsides- stuff shifts around so you have to pack very very very well. I'd actually recommend hiring movers to pack the cubes. We did it ourselves and thought we were good, but did have some things 'rub' on the edges or where we didn't pad enough. Luckily nothing broke, but some furniture did get scuffed on the edges at the sides of the cube, etc. But it was our fault for not padding/covering well...not the cubes, if you KWIM. I'd definitely buy more pads next time and do a better job. And Definitely get plastic bags for mattresses and 'soft' stuff, they get sort of dusty on the road (of course, again we moved 2600 miles) but I'd read that online and planned accordingly and stuff was fine.
I LOVED that we had the keys to the locks and they are not opened at all during the move...unlike when you have a trunk and your stuff is shared with others, etc. We also used them to store a few things for awhile and we had tracking numbers so we knew exactly where they were on the trip, etc.
Have you seen my monkey?
A ton of our stuff has been in a 16' POD since November. We hired movers to load it. The way the POD gets picked up is pretty cool. However we haven't moved in yet so I can't speak to how well it will end up on the other end. I'm hoping everything is still in good shape.
We are only moving 20 blocks.
We did have to pay for a parking permit from the city to park it curbside. It was good for 2 weeks, I think it was less than $50. They wont drop the POD until you verify the permit with the driver. You also need to provide your own lock.
