Any other vegetarians or vegans here?

Hey Ladies, I am just curious if there are any vegans or vegetarians here?

If so, how long have you been vegan or vegetarian?  How does the rest of your immediate family eat?

Re: Any other vegetarians or vegans here?

  • Vegetarian here, specifically ovo/lacto (I eat dairy and eggs, but no fish or other meat). I've been veggie for around 10 years now, starting as a young teenager. My FI eats meat, but he's not a huge meat eater, eating mostly chicken (not giant steaks every day). I am considering eating meat again though, since among other things it would lead to us cooking more (right now we both tend to eat simple salads with pre-cooked meat/fake meat, and it's getting boring). Not sure if I can do it though.
  • Vegetarian here!  Been a vegetarian since I was 22 (7 years ago).  My H is 99% veg; he occasionally eats fish when he's traveling for business (easier to eat fish in a foreign country than to order a vegetarian meal that turns out to be chicken).

  • I was raised vegetarian so I suppose I became a meat eater about 10 years ago (around 25ish). I don't have a flippin' clue how to cook meat so really only eat it when going out to eat and even then it's nothing I seek out - so probably 3-4x a week.

DH was also raised vegetarian but will occasionally order chicken at restaurant so maybe 1-2x a week.

  • Vegetarian for 13 years prior to becoming vegan for the past 4 years. My husband is vegan too and we don't have any kids so it's pretty easy.
  • I've been an ovo-lacto vegetarian since I was 17 (19+ years).  My toddler is also a vegetarian, and my husband is basically vegetarian at home.  I don't cook meat and I don't allow it to be cooked in the house.  He eats meat at work and when we go out, but he is strictly on my plan when at home and he has absolutely no complaints about it.  Grilling outside when the weather is nice is fair game for him.
  • Vegetarian for 19 years. I consume dairy and will eat eggs if they are in something, but never on their own (the smell makes me yak). Growing up, none of my family was vegetarian, so I mostly add side dishes or made my own dinner. When i was married, XH ate minimal meat, mostly super processed gross meat (ie hotdogs or bologna).

Now more of my extended family is eating less and less meat and we have a number of vegetarian dishes for family/ holiday meals

  • I was vegetarian for 10 years but am now what I call a "chicketarian" (aka a "flexitarian"). I occasionally eat poultry but no other meat. I eat dairy and eggs.
  • Yep, I'm vegetarian, 95% vegan and have been veggie for about 15 years. DH eats meat regularly and so does the dog. Stick out tongue
  • Wow I love it!  Veg*nism is so rare among my family & friends (I'm the only one)  Sad  I do have an aunt who lives in Seattle who is vegan, and a friend in NY who is vegetarian... but I live in Minnesota.  Stick out tongue

So for those of you who's significant others eat vegetarian meals - what are some meals that they particularly like?

I was vegetarian, then vegan for a year but as my wedding got closer, stress got the best of me and I slid back in to eating eggs/dairy, and then meat on occasion.  I wasn't eating it much but I was eating it.  For the past several months however, I am frequently reminded of why I wanted to go veg in the first place and I have been inadvertently avoiding meat.  I can't remember the last time I did eat it... Anyway my husband is an avid meat eater and my biggest struggle is serving things that please both of us at dinner time!  So I'm always looking for suggestions or ideas when it comes to appeasing omnivores.   Can anyone offer any suggestions?

  • At this point, I consider myself to be a Flexitarian. I was a Vegetarian/Vegan for close to 2 years and then fell off of the wagon hard, coming with that was a 35lb weight gain (of the 101lbs that I had previously lost). Now I am back to a mostly Vegetarian diet w/ very little dairy (I'm Lactose Intollerant, so my system can't handle it anyway), I have eggs pretty much every day, fish 1-2 times a week and meat 1-2 times a week when the BF is over because he won't eat fish and prefers to not have meatless meals. I'm okay with having meat 1-2 times a week, but really can't do more than that. I don't think that I can ever go back to being 100% Vegetarian, but I like to enjoy a mostly Vegetarian diet.

  • There is a link to my blog in my sig.  Just about every recipe I've posted is in pretty heavy rotation around here and my husband eats them with enthusiasm.  We had Pasta e Ceci for dinner last night, & he also loves the Roasted Curried Cauliflower Soup and the Curried Red Lentils with Potatoes.  I think the key is coming up with meals that are great on their own rather than trying to overcompensate for the "lack" of meat.  Hope this helps.

Thank you for posting this. I'm always looking for more vegitarian blogs for recipe ideas. H is a big meat eater so finding ways to satisfy us both without cooking two meals is difficult.

  • Hi there!

I started on a vegan journey about this time last year.  I was doing quite good, then decided that it was too hard to maintain, as the rest of my family were quite avid meat eaters. (besides my 12 year old daughter who is quite happy not eating meat)

I still consider myself 90% vegan, as I only eat fish or chicken no more than 2x a week.  I will also (sometimes) allow myself things with eggs, or milk in them like french toast, tea, pancakes, etc but it is very rare.

My DH is an avid hunter, and LOVES his meat and potatoes, but he has changed his eating quite a lot since I started on my journey.  If it is meat that he has caught (deer, moose, fish) I have no problem cooking these dishes for the family as it is way healthier than eating the store bought meat.  As long as it is 3-4 times per week at most.

Most of the time we compromise, and eat the same thing.  It usually breaks down like this:

2x week we eat fish or chicken for suppers

2X I cook some other type of meat, and I eat the sides or I may make tacos/spaghetti something where I can cook the meat on the side and they can add later.

the other times we eat left overs, vegan dishes, salads

My biggest problem right now is trying to get my 5 year old to eat healthier.  I can control it at home and in her lunches but after school she goes to DH's parents and they have the attitude that a little sugar is harmless. (only they give her a little sugar everyday!)

  • I'm a vegetarian and have been since middle school. I have no ethical issues with eating animal products, I just don't like the taste of meat at all, and honestly it creeps me out. My boyfriend eats meat, but has become more of an restaurant meat eater since we've been together, although I do buy him ham or turkey for sandwiches and chicken sausages for when he wants meat in his dinner. Once in a while I'll make a big crockpot meal of chili for him. I am a short order cook? I just take half the portion and add meat to it and leave mine alone, or I'll have no problem making him a full dinner and myself a second of something completely different.
