Hi INs!
I've lurked a bit and noticed that this is a very welcoming and helpful board. I thought I'd see if any of you had any advice/experience with taxes.
I'm an American living in the Netherlands with my Dutch (non-American) husband. I lived the entire year in the Netherlands and did not bring in any income last year. I assume I do not need to file taxes, as I don't have any assets in the US, but I've heard that the US is a bit particular when it comes to expats and tax filing, so I wanted to run this by you all.
We may move to the US in a few years, and when we go to get my husband's greencard, I don't want to find out I've been breaking some IRS rule and have a mess on my hands.
Thoughts? Advice?
Re: Those of you who don't bring in money- a tax question
You have not tax filing requirement. There is a minimum amount of money you can make before the IRS requires you to file a return. The amount is above 0.
Last I looked it was $8,000 plus.
Even though you have no tax return filing requirement you may have to file a Form TD F 90-22.1 you can find it on the IRS website. If you had any access to a foreign bank account where the value exceeded $10,000 at any point during the year then you have file the TD F 90-22.1. It's due June 30th.
Thanks for you reply! This is very helpful and reassuring.
Thanks for the tip!
