Train to run in the heat

Hey! I am an Oregonian and the weather is well, cold and wet. I will be running Pat's Run (4.2 miles) next month in Arizona. I understand the weather will be about 70-80 during the run. What is the best way to acclimate myself when I run, so I am prepared when i get there? I was thinking of spending a lot of time on the treadmill, long pants and long sleeves...But I am not sure if that's the right idea or what to prepare myself for running in a tank & shorts in warm weather. I've never run in weather so nice!.

Thoughts?

  • I don't know that you can really prepare yourself for the heat, other than to make sure you're hydrated and start out slower than you think you need to.

  • Not exactly the same, but I'm training for a half right now, and temps in IL have gone from mid 30s to 80+ in a matter of a couple weeks. It has been really difficult to acclimate and I find myself thirsty SO much sooner. Definitely hydrate and take it slow initially. GL!

  • The only way to truly train for the heat is to run in the heat.  It takes several weeks to adapt to, so if all you have is the treadmill, I would go with that.  Maybe not every run, but definitely at least once a week or so. 

    Also, ditto pp, drink more, watch your electrolytes and take it slow.

     

  • there's not going to be a lot of prepping you can do, short of going on and moving to Arizona.  At least you won't have to deal with humidity!

    You're going to go slow, a lot slower than you expect.  So hydrate, starting 48 hours beforehand, and drink during the race as well, even if you normally wouldn't for that distance.  Make sure to grab some gatorade at the end of the race to help replace the electrolytes you lost.

    And again, prepare to go slow.  The general rule of thumb is you're going to be 3% slower for every 10 degrees above 50*.

  • You can't really train for it.  I live in NC and it gets hot in the summer but every year it is still a challenge to run outside.

    The treadmill may help but really the posts above this one are the answer.  Hydrate and listen to you body.

    ditto this.  not much you can do.  enjoy the race, but don't expect to knock it out of the park.  heat really slows you down.  

  • Thanks so much for the help! I will make sure to hydrate as much as I can and even take some of those Nuun electrolyte tablets with me to AZ. I never would have thought about starting slower, so this is good that you mentioned it!
