I've done a lot of roadtrips around the US (posts in blog, link in siggy). The best ever was probably my cross-country roadtrip with my bestie when I was 17. We took a few months and drove from Ohio to California. We camped out in Texas in a thunderstorm. We partied in Vegas. We hiked in Arizona. We jumped in the Pacific Ocean fully clothed. We hung out on Hollywood Blvd at 2:am. Thank goodness we were too naive to know just how dangerous many of the things were did really were! We did the entire trip with like $400 and the generosity of a lot of strangers.
As a married couple, DH and I had a blast in St. Louis- almost every attraction is free- the zoo, the art museum, the science center, the Anheiser-Busch tour- all free. The most we paid was $8 to go to the Botanical Garden. Everyone was so friendly, it was easy to get around on foot and by car and we did everything on a very small budget.

Believe it or not...a spur of the moment long weekend to Yellowstone National Park.
The weather was cool and refreshing. We stayed at the Old Faithful Lodge and sat on benches at night drinking wine or hot apple cider as we watched other guests mill around the lobby.
We did some hiking and we drove around the park to the various thermal features.
It was just so pretty and relaxing.
W/in the U.S. it would be Charleston, SC and Kiawah Island.
Charleston is just beautiful and so genteel and we enjoyed an amazing dinner at The Sanctuary on Kiawah.
Angel Oak (between Charleston & Kiawah) is one of the coolest things I've ever seen (reputed to be the largest, oldest living tree in the Eastern U.S.)
Plus the food and shopping there is fabulous.

I'd have to say either Yellowstone or Long Boat Key, FL.
Yellowstone was just amazing, I don't think I've ever said "wow" so much on a trip before. There is more open space and beatiful scenery there than I'd ever seen before in my life. You could turn around 360 and see almost nothing man made at some spots.
Long Boat was also beautiful, but in a different way. It's beachy of course, but it was nice and relaxing.
Our two trips to Hawaii though were my all time fave vacations.
San Diego!!! Great weather, food, lots of things to do & see at a reasonable price.
I also love Chicago and NYC.
Some trips I'd like to do in the US would be Yellowstone, NOLA, Napa Valley, and Seattle.
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

I have a few...
Last fall, we spent 9 days between the Hoover Dam, Sedona, Flagstaff, South Rim & North Rim of the Grand Canyon & Bryce Canyon & Zion national parks in Utah. We hiked a ton & saw such beautiful things. We even spent a night at the bottom of the Grand Canyon at Phantom Ranch. I feel like it was truly the trip of a life time.
We planned the trip for 13 months & everything went so smoothly. Although it was hard work I'd do it again if we had the time (too many other places on the travel list to start repeating though)
Hard to pick a favorite, so I'll say:
For sentimental reasons: Cape Cod (Provincetown)
For pure fun/celebration: Key West, FL
For Natural Beauty: North Rim Grand Canyon
For "Big" cities or urban vacations: San Francisco
NOLA
DH and I went for a long weekend and had a great time. Great atmoshphere, food, music etc. Also, this was the first trip I hadn't done any planning. Normally, I spend time looking up things to do and timeline for when to do them. It was great having no plans and just going where the day or night took us.
hmm that is a hard one!
some of my favorites that stick out in my memory are:
cross country trip to mt rushmore, yellowstone, grand tetons, san fran & nappa. it was one of those amazing, once in a lifetime trips.
my dh and i did a trip to vegas then the grand canyon & arizona for a family wedding, which was also up there.
myrtel beach, we just had a ball there. when i ask my 5 year old where he wants to go he picks this every time, even over disney.
and speaking of that, another I would say is disney. my dh and i went when we first starting dating 10 years ago and now we go almost every year with our 5 year old. it's an oldie but goodie.
Grand Canyon, Vegas, Death Valley, Kings Canyon Nat Park, Yosemite and San Fran.
Becuase it had a bit of everything
It's hard to pick only one but I'll say our Cali road trip last year: We started in San Francisco, over to Sonoma for a few days, then down the PCH all the way to Pismo Beach and back to SF. So fun, a variety of beautiful sceneries and things to do!
Second one would be Florida a few years ago with my BFF - Miami, South Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm...it was a blast, shopping, nightlife, beaches, sun & fun!
Charleston - historic on the water good food romantic laid back
San Antonio - alamo, river, missions, food
Santa Fe - landscape history arts food
San Francisco and Napa/ Sonoma. Sonoma was more of what my imagination thought Napa Valley was. San Francisco is a really fun city and I didn't feel as self conscious as I do when we visit my brother in Orange County. This was my favorite adult trip. It would not have been the same with our 2 and 4 year old in tow. Favorite family trips are to the beach, Hilton Head and OBX.
Some of the previous posts are places on my "I want to do that when the boys are older" list. You've gotten some great suggestions!

This! We didn't have dinner on Kiawah but we just drove around and walked on the very quiet and scenic beach. Charleston has fantastic restaurants and is such a pretty place. DH and I are into architecture so we loved looking at the buildings. It was a relaxing but extremely enjoyable trip. Plus he proposed there! But we both talk about what a great trip city it is!
I haven't taken a lot of vacations within the US but so far #1 is my first trip to NYC when I was 17 and spent the summer at NYU studying at Tisch.
Then definitely our first trip to Vegas, hubby's birthday gift for me, which established that Vegas is among our favorite destinations.
And thirdly, the tour of Southern California I made with my BFF. HIghlights were Laguna Beach, Palm Springs and Santa Barbara.
