Do you always wash your fabric before you start a sewing project?
Even if it is not for a piece of clothing? For instance, If i'm trying to make a tote bag, should i wash the fabric first?
also, i bought 1 1/2 yards, but i'm not sure how much i will use. should i just throw the whole 1 1/2 yards into the washing machine?
sorry if these questions seem dumb, but i'm a new sewer.
thanks!!!!
Re: Do you always wash your fabric before you start a sewing project?
I wash all my fabric when it comes home, so all of it's prewashed. I would wash fabric meant for a tote bag, especially if you want to be able to wash it later and not have it all shrink funny. Cottons can shrink weird. Plus, prewashing some sturdier fabric will make it less scratchy. (I hate scratchy fabric.)

I'll preface this by saying that I don't quilt--if I did, my answer would be different.
I prewash everything. In my world, 99% of what I make is clothing so it needs to be preshrunk. I would definitely prewash fabric for a tote since that is going to need a good washing every once in a while
Plus, it takes out those nasty chemicals they put in fabric to make it look good on the bolt.
