You ran an ultra and a marathon a few weeks apart in the fall, right? Any tips on how to do it? I have about 3 1/2 weeks to get marathon ready again. I think I am going to attempt an easy run tomorrow and then start getting back into training.

Also, I cannot say enough good things about the Gansett Marathon race director. I kinda know him from running local races in southern Rhode Island and seeing him around the campus where I work. He is a talented runner, extremely well-organized, and incredibly nice. I hope you can do Gansett next year! Combine it with a trip to Boston to scope out the marathon.

Re: **daisysle**

  • I did run an ultra and a marathon within 3 weeks of each other.  After the ultra, I took 3 days off to recover and eased back into running.  I treated the 3 weeks leading up to the marathon as a marathon taper.  I wish I had my 2011 training log to give you the exacts, but I let a follow runner borrow it for her marathon training.  I want to say I ran a slow & easy 10 miles the weekend after the ultra and 8 miles as my long run 1 week out from the marathon.

    I am going to work on my dad in hopes that he will run Gansett with me.  I'd hate for my BQ to go to waste.  And it would still be good if they decide to drop the Gansett qualifying times by 5 minutes.

    Congrats again on your BQ!  I know exactly how you felt crossing the finish line and achieving that goal!!  It's an amazing feeling.

  • ::butting in::

    Daisy, how much harder was the ultra than the marathon?  DH is doing the reverse.  He ran a marathon March 4th and is doing a 50K April 14th.

  • The ultra was a lot harder because it was all run on trails.  It made the marathon feel like an easy 26.2 mile run.

  • Thanks, this is helpful. I will have extra time to train over the next few weeks. I'm just not sure what to do about next weekend's long run. I kinda want to get in another longish long run, but I guess I'll see what happens when I get back out there. Tomorrow.

    I have a strong feeling GQ times will drop by 5 minutes for 2013, although I also think Gansett needs to draw more runners in future races. Stricter qualifiers could go either way. Fewer runners would qualify, but maybe it would be more appealing to runners who do qualify.

    Oh, you need to work on your dad! He needs a non-medal to put on his race Christmas tree.

  • I want to say I did 12 miles, 8 miles and then the marathon for my taper after the ultra.

    Ha, a non-medal.  Love that!  He can position the patch on the tree since I am sure his Boston medal will be the tree toppper this year.
