My name is dmarie, and I fell off the h&f wagon....

I used to be a regular on this board and then I got busy with starting a new job, hurt my knee and couldn't run, blah, blah, blah.

And now I am 10-15 pounds heavier. My pants are starting to not fit and I don't feel confident anymore. I used to be proud of my body and now I try and hide it. A year ago at this time I was training for a half marathon (which I completed). Now I get winded running 2 miles and I am scared to death of getting hurt again (knee problems).

I have my sights on a half in September and I just ordered NROLFW. I have been trying to watch what I eat using Sparkpeople and I am trying to get to the gym. But I just feel so discouraged and I have barely just begun. If anyone can offer any advice/encouragement, I would really appreciate it!

  • Just because you can't run doesn't mean you can't be active and lead a healthy lifestyle.  This board is a little crazy over running, and I myself am a runner.  Try weight lifting and other cardio that won't harm your knee.  Be careful with NROLFW, lots of lunges that may strain your knee.  Start dieting.  Count your calories.  Sparkpeople is great for that.  There is also a "fitness pal" ap where you can scan the barcode of a purchased item and it will enter the calories per serving automatically, so you dont have to type everything in...makes it easier, and you always have your phone with you, so easier to count calories as you eat them :)  And keep frequenting this board, we will encourage you!  Welcome back :)

  • I'm right there w/ you dmarie.  One too many cupcakes for me to deal with the stress over the past few months... and I have to get into a wedding dress in 7 months.

     Embarrassed

I'm taking it one day at a time and being diligent about tracking calories and setting goals for myself like I will not eat that piece of candy out of so and so's candy jar. It's hard but I need to keep myself accountable!

  • Welcome back, dmarie!  I agree that you might want to look in to things that don't put as much strain on your knee.  Have you done any physical therapy for the injury or are you just resting it?  Can you do something like biking?

Tracking calories and mini-goals are a good way to get back on track, even if the first goal is just a full day of healthy eating and a walk after dinner.

I injured it last summer from overuse and weak muscles. I went to PT and rested it but because life got in the way, I never got back into running that much. I LOVE to run. I WANT to run. I am trying to get back into running but doing it the "right" way so I don't get the inflammation again. So, I am running 1-2 miles 2 times a week and working on lifting to strengthen my leg muscles so I can handle the stress on from running. My goal is to get back into running regularly and my hope is that if I train the "right" way, I won't have any issues.

    Thanks for the encouragement, ladies!

Yep, we're in the same boat!

I had to stop running in November because of severe runner's knee.  I ended up doing two months of physical therapy for it (after resisting the idea of PT every step of the way).  I've been back to running for a month now.  I'm doing the Couch to 5K program again, like I did years and years ago, but this time I'm taking two weeks to do each week.  It'll take me 16 weeks to get back to a 5K...  That's so depressing to write.

Anyway, I feel you.  Good luck and be smart about it!
