anyone have a custom single panel drape made for sliding glass door?

Just curious about cost & where you got it?
I got a quote from my blinds/shutter guy for $1300 for drape, hardware, install, tax Seems steep but I know nothing about drape costs b/c I tend to stick to blinds & plantation shutters... our doors are tall (like 96" from molding to floor) and I want a single panel that slides over to one side so I know a large piece of fabric like that is expensive...

I have JC Penney coming for a quote too in a couple weeks.

Thoughts?

  • Holy. $1300? Is this just a fabric drape? You're right about one thing- 96" panels are expensive. But you should be able to find fabric, or find 2 panels that you (or someone else) can sew together for under $200. Curtain hardware is super easy to install, even for first timers. My first thought when reading this is that you are getting robbed at that price. Maybe someone else can chime in and say otherwise?

  • That price is outrageous, even if you're going with a really high end fabric.  What are you looking for?

Do you sew?  Making a panel is probably one of the easiest things you can do--it's just a large rectangle.  You could also use Steam A Seam, which they sell at Joann Fabrics--you just peel the ends, put it on your fabric, fold over and iron to make a hem.  For a 96" tall window, you would need 3 yards of fabric (108"), and home decor fabric is usually 54" wide.  I have curtain panels on my sliders (purchased off the rack at JCP), but I put two of each on each end so they'd look a little fuller.

If DIY is not the route you want to go, definitely check JCP, Target, Overstock for premade  96" curtain panels--they should have a fairly large selection, especially if you just want a solid color.  A rod at target that is the width of the whole door should be like $50, and they are super easy to install if you have a drill.

I don't sew (and honestly would not sew 2 panels together, that sounds a little cheesy, no offense) and I won't be installing it myself cuz I've got zero in the handy dept (MH too) but that aside, I'm hoping for a happy medium...$600?  Yes it is just a fabric drape but probably with a liner since it is in front of a window & intended for privacy/light blockage, so we're looking at about 54 sq ft of fabric for just the fabric part, not the liner, plus the liner, sewing in the holes for rings or rod or whatever, a very long rod, etc.   (the drape would need to be more like 104 inches since the molding height is 96 and the doors are 76" wide).

I suspect part of what would make it so expensive is most fabrics don't come on bolts (right word?) that are that wide, so I'm limited to certain fabrics? I only want one panel, our door is in a corner & I want it to be pushed only to one side and where I can open it partially or fully & not worry about 2 different panels. I guess that sounds very particular but I think it will be better for our room/door.

Not sure. Guess I will see!

  • What are the measurements of the fabric that was quoted?  I am confused on how you are coming up with 54 square feet.  If your door is 8' tall (96"), how wide do you want the curtain to be?

Home decorator fabrics generally come in two widths 54/56", or you can also find double width fabric, which generally runs about 108" wide.

  • haha, I might be doing the math wrong!

the door is 96 but you need more fabric than that to go on a rod hung above the door (?)so I was going with about 104" or 8.7 feet, and it is 76 inches wide, or 6.3 wide. Multiplied together that is around 54 ft. Am I wrong? (hiding face if so...)

No offense taken. I think jcp is going to better in price for a custom panel, for sure. Reading why you want just one panel for your corner door makes total sense, too. But can you guys hang a picture? Hanging a drapery rod is pretty much the same thing- make sure the two sides are level, drill, done. Most rods come with simple instructions. Can a neighbor or family member assist you? You'll pay an arm and a leg for a pro to come install it for you. It just depends on if you want to save money or not. Some people would just rather pay to have it done, I understand that. Whatever route you choose, come back and show a picture!

  • No, no, that's right, I confused a bit because fabric typically isn't quoted in square feet, so then I though I misunderstood your initial post.  :-)

$1600 still seems really high to me, but admittedly I'm coming at it from the POV of someone who sews and usually does DIY installs.  Here is a website where you can order (custom) something like what you want--maybe you can get a comparison price similar to the fabric they quoted?

I hope JCP is more reasonable.

yeah I put it in sq ft only to put it into context of how large the piece of fabric would be which I think is part of the issue with the cost.

And yes...I can hang things but honestly I hate it & MH is no help (us doing any house project together is NEVER a good thing and leads to a lot of bickering) and I can't imagine hanging a 6 ft long rod 8 ft in the air by myself. THe install part of the quote was only $30 fwiw. I know a guy who is going to hang some other stuff in our house and he charges $40/hr so I figure even if I have to hire him just to hang this it is worth it b/c I don't want to do it alone.  Sad. No sewing, no hanging, I suck at domesticity :(. at least I cook I guess.

  • This is a little off topic but I'm trying to figure how only one panel will work when the area to be covered is over 6" wide.  Aren't you going to need a bracket in the middle?  If so, how will that work with a single panel?

Well that is a good question!  I have no idea but I know my window guy was definitely planning on one panel. Now that I think of it, he was prob planning on a sliding track style rod w/ finials at the end. Kind of like in hotels??

And that would make the price go up for construction too I would think?

  • Are you sure he is quoting you just the curtain? It sounds like from how you are describing the track what my parents have. They have the vertical blinds that are within a curtain. They are on a track. And i know they were pricey.

No idea on pricing, but I'd definitely get a definitive answer before you drop $1000 on a panel Smile

  • What kind of fabric are you using?

I just ordered sheers to cover a window that is 124" wide and 102" high.

For two sheers at 60"x102" it was $300/panel, because each panel consisted of 2.5 widths of fabric. They're going to be pinch pleated on top with drapery rings.

I'm flanking the sheers with silk panels that are 1 panel length each so 22" (pleated again) lined and interlined with weighted corners. Those panels are running me about $170 per panel.

I punched your measurements in and got $580 for a pleated silk panel.

$1300 sounds high, even with hardware and installation.

  • I looked at my estimate again & he wrote "rod, brackets and finials" so I guess he was thinking a rod, not a track (I need to ask about how that works, will let you all know :) ).

Anyway, the drape itself is $942 of the total estimate. I will post back after I get the JC Penney estimate to see the difference!

ETA just heard from him & he said the rods he uses are strong enough no problem (& he has been doing this for like 10 year & I'm pretty sure has this type of drape in his house). Sooo I guess not a track for sure then.
