Is this plantar fasciitis?

I'm hoping someone can give me some insight or some tips. The last couple of days, particularly after my last couple of runs, I have had I guess soreness/tenderness basically on the inner portion of the arch of my foot. Is this plantar fasciitis? I have no pain in my heel, just the middle of my foot. I have been fitted for running shoes (got them a couple of months ago) and haven't had a problem until now, although I did wear some not-so-comfortable regular shoes a couple of days this week. Could those have been the cause but the running just aggravated it more?

What can or should I do to help it? Thanks!

  • Probably.  I had very similar pain and just went to the podiatrist on Monday and it was PF.  He prescribed ice (roll it on a frozen water bottle), rest (two weeks off running) and motrin.

    This. Ice just as wellfleet described & Ibuprofen (if you can tolerate it...& make sure if you do take it that you take it w/food or milk) You can also try stretching, every day/night, before you get out of/in bed. Just google "plantar fasciitis stretches" & you'll find a million hits.

    Just remember that all of the above will alleviate your pain/symptoms over time, starting all of that won't make your pain go away in a week, it takes awhile.

  • Ditto the PP's.  I just went to the ortho on Monday and that's what he said I have too.  He gave me some steroids to reduce the inflammation and said to use ice and gave me a bunch of stretches to do and exercises with a theraband.  The frozen water bottle really helps (even though it really hurts me when I use it - it feels much better afterward).  He did say I'd be ok to start running again after I finish the steroids in 6 days, but I've also already been "off" for 3 weeks, so we'll see.  If your shoes are on the older side, I'd probably get fitted for new shoes when your foot feels better too.  I think my old shoes were worn out and aggravated my problems.  GL and feel better soon!
  • Well... my PF presents very differently.  It's in my heel and is worse after periods inactivity.  I can barely walk on it in the mornings after getting up out of bed, but once it's loosened up, I'm okay.  Running doesn't aggravate it, in fact stretching it out and using the muscle is so much better than resting it.

    I'd go see a podiatrist.  If it is PF, they will give you stretches and braces to help ease the pain.  But, it could also just be a pulled muscle in your foot.

  • Just curious...I keep seeing people say that they go to a podiatrist for PF.  Should I *not* be going to my ortho?  I unfortunately know them well between my daughter and my past injuries, so went there as my first course of action.

    The recommendation is anything from the ankle and above, go see an ortho.  Below, go see a podiatrist.  My sister is in med school and said nobody knows feet any better than a podiatrist.  Feet are far too complicated.  Just do your research and find a good one.

    OP, I was having arch tingling, etc. and my podiatrist said I have hypermobility and all I needed was orthotics.  I don't even need to wear them to run and I've never had a single problem since.  I'm glad I went to a podiatrist because if I hadn't, nobody would have said all the problems you have are because of hypermobility and if I don't treat it now with orthotics, I'd end up suffering from bone spurs (which were already giving me issues) and eventually require surgery.  The orthotics basically solve all my issues.   Your issue may be PF but a visit to the podiatrist is definitely worth it.

    Ditto this. I work for orthos & podiatrists. Our orthos won't even see feet (aside from urgent fractures...which they'll treat if necessary (ie: if our podiatrists are out of the office for an extended period of time) but then refer to our podiatrists).

  • Thank you all for the tips and advice. I'm going to give it a few days of rest, and if it is still bothering me next week I will look into going to the podiatrist.
