S/O French Laundry

Sixth Anniversary
For those of you that have been, was it hard to make reservations? I know you can't make them until the 2 month mark out so we are planning on calling that exact day but is it one of those, you have to call the second they start picking up the phones or you will not be able to get a reservation? Does anyone know what time they do start picking up the phone? It's only four of us but didn't know how hard it was. I can't wait, we're planning on going while we are out there in June. Thanks so much guys!

Re: S/O French Laundry

  • My understanding is that if you try to call in on the phone line, it can be extremely difficult - you basically need to have multiple people calling in (recruit friends, family, etc.) and you need to start calling promptly at 10 AM PST when they open their phone lines (double check the time on their website but I'm pretty sure it's 10 AM... might be 11 AM).  Keep calling for at least an hour if you don't get through.  There are web forums that are strictly dedicated to 'how to make reservations at French Laundry' so it sounds like quite an experience!

I got reservations with absolutely no headache at all through my American Express Platinum card.  If you have one of those, you just should call the concierge in advance (I called 2 1/2 months out), before the FL had opened their reservations for that day, and tell AmEx what you're looking for.  They then work with the restaurant (I think they have a pretty good partnership) and try to secure you a table.  They got us a table without any problems on a Saturday evening, and they called the restaurant for us 3 days prior to reconfirm our reservations.  I loved it and would totally use them again in the future (I also have a friend who knows the General Manager there, though, so I could use that in if needed).

It's an expensive meal (DH and I spent $1,500 for the two of us with wine pairings and add-ons), but it's delicious and the service is impeccable.  I was going to go back for my birthday in May, but then talked DH into a 5-week trek through Europe so we're going to instead dine at Alain Ducasse when we stay in Monaco... but if we weren't doing that I'd totally be making return reservations to TFL!  Enjoy!

  • If there are 4 of you, try through Open Table 60 days before your desired date. The first time we went it was just the 2 of us and we just had to redial and redial until we got lucky enough to get through (and the first day we tried it took me an hour just to get through to an actual person). But this next time there's 4 of us I tried through Open Table and got a res pretty quickly.

ETA: I'll clarify my answer since I was in a rush: Open Table might have 2 tops available, but they definitely have 4 tops, so while it's tough to get a table for 2 through it, 4 wasn't hard at all. I just logged in ahead of time and started refreshing at the same time we were calling. There is some information out there that states the Open Table FL tables open up at midnight or between 8 and 10 in the morning, but I called a couple days in advance and they told me they go up the same time the tables open by phone.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

  • We used the Amex Platinum concierge and had no issues.
  • We tried using our credit card concierge but had no luck. We also tried calling ourselves multiple times. Oh well. We ended up going to Cyrus, which was also very good.
