Frankfurt / Heidelberg / Mainz

I will be staying in Frankfurt for a couple days and am wondering what there is to do. Should I go to Heidelberg or Mainz instead? What is there to do there?

Re: Frankfurt / Heidelberg / Mainz

  • I haven't been to Mainz, but I adored Heidelberg. There's a pretty cool castle with sweeping views over the city and river valley, boat trips down the River Nektar, a really pretty Aldstadt (old city) with cobblestone, pedestrian streets through a market, lots of cute shops, and pretty buildings. There's also some walks along the river that we really enjoyed. People were extremely nice, food was affordable and delicious, and we really loved our time there.

We drove there from Frankfurt, which was really easy, and also did a day trip to Baden Baden.

  • Honestly, I did not really care for Mainz. It just seemed like a normal city that I could find anywhere when compared to some of the surrounding towns. I could be slightly biased in that I had just picked up my brand new car in Munich 2 days before and got a little lost in Mainz. When I went to do a three point turn, I backed into a pole. It's just a small scratch, that is still there BTW, but I cried all the way back to Eltville-Erbach, which is where I was staying, Silly story LOL I would go to Heidelberg instead.

  • About 10 years ago I went to Mainz because a friend was getting married.  So I was lucky in that friends and family of the bride took me around, and I got to hang at the local bar/club scene.  It was a cute place with plenty of shopping and beautiful architecture.  But if I was a tourist, I'm not sure I would go back for more than 1-2 days.

  • We spent two days in Mainz in December and really enjoyed the old town with half timbered buildings all decorated for Christmas and of course the Christmas market was great.  There's a nice walk along the Rhine and the Guttenberg museum. There seemed to be some good shopping and lots of restaurants and bars.  Not sure what else was there since we were only there for a short time and that was my first time to Germany so I can't compare to other towns or cities.  It was only a 20 minute train ride from the Frankfurt airport though and very convenient.
