I missed it!

I missed all of last nights shenanigans because I was at the vet with my itchy dog.

Hugs please. Dozer is super itchy and now something is wrong with his hip. Crate rest and 6 medications later we're in a "waiting period."

I feel so bad for him. There's not much else I can do than what I'm doing, but it just sucks. I look at him and just wish he could TELL me what is wrong.

When will they make that collar that allows dogs to talk? That would be great! kthxbai!

  • **hugs** I hope your dog feels better and you figure out what's going on with him!! How old is he?

  • As far as we know (he's a rescue) he's going on 8 or so.

The allergy issues aren't new. The hip thing is. And because bulldogs (of all kinds) are super prone to back issues I am freaked the eff out about it.

    :(

    do you have pet insurance?

  • Oh no, I'm sorry about your pup!

Have you looked into changing his food? Most dry kibbles have ingredients that canine bodies aren't built to process, and thus an allergic reaction occurs. A lot of vets will just prescribe medication and topical ointments, which is a band aid fix and not getting to the root of the problem.

If you haven't already, I'd transition him to a grain-free food and see if that helps. If not, you may need to move to higher quality foods with less "filler" ingredients like corn, rice, and other excess vegetables.

Best case scenario would be to feed a home-cooked or completely raw diet of all meat, organs, and bones so your dog's body isn't working overtime to digest the unnecessary ingredients in processed dog food.

http://www.dogfoodchat.com/forum is a great forum with a ton of great info on canine nutrition and medical issues that I'm a member of... the people are really nice, too.

  • I was thinking the same thing as Missus, it may be a food allergy. I know that my husband had a Samoyed, and she was allergic to grass (couldn't fix) but also a wheat allergy, that would cause skin problems, and her hair would fall out because she would itch so much. And the vet did the same thing, of prescribing drugs and creams, when really all she needed was an overhaul of her diet.

  • Thanks for the hugs and kind words everyone. I'm just so down about all of this.

Oh, trust me. I am the queen of allergy dogs. He's on a limited ingredient diet, his clothes and bedding get washed with Dreft, he gets medicated baths twice or more a week.

We've done allergy injections for over a year and a half (to the tune of thousands of dollars) and he's just allergic to LIFE.

We thought we were on top of it this year (spring and fall are worst), but because of the change in weather so fast we had to do the course of steroids we were hoping to avoid.

Bright side is, the steroids might help with his crate rest and hip issues. Plus, it will definitely give him some relief even if it isn't a long term solution.

No, no pet insurance because we got him from a rescue when he was 5 and he already had a TON of issues. We knew about that going in so don't think I'm complaining about the money or the time or the allergies.

They just suck. I hate to see such a happy dog so miserable. Plus, now he's all wobbly and I'm so worried he is going to have spine/back/neck/hip issues.

And I ate an ENTIRE bakery cupcake last night which made me feel even worse since eating your feelings is bad.
