Anyone planning any holiday parties?

I love throwing parties. I don't have the best house for it (apartment) but I really enjoy it anyway. We have an annual Cinco de Mayo which is always a blast and I really enjoy prepping for. I started getting into a party-throwing mood again but my next scheduled party is 6 months away!

So I'm thinking about having a Festivus party. I had originally considered a traditional holiday party, but I thought a Festivus party would be more fun. We're not doing a tree this year, so there will be plenty of room for a Festivus Pole. I was thinking about having a clipboard available for the Airing of Grievances, and Erik is excited about organizing the Feats of Strength.
I've several friends who are big Seinfeld fans, so I know at least 4 people will get the joke. :)

Anyone else having a party?

Re: Anyone planning any holiday parties?

  • I hate throwing parties but am allowing my friend, who has a small house, throw a holiday party at my place. It's an Ugly Holiday Sweater Potluck! I'm excited to help out with the details without actually being in charge.
  • Kinda. We're going to have some friends over for dinner and drinks sometime in December.

I'm supposed to invite my office over to play Wii sometime after Christmas, but I don't really want to hang out with one or two of them after work.

  • Not this year. ?I had one last year, a sort of housewarming type of thing. ?I cooked a ton, people loved it, and it happened to coincide with H's birthday, so I could sneak a celebration on him that he didn't want :)

I'll be with my family this year, and I haven't seen them in a few years, so it should be interesting. ?They're not really the party types.?

  • That's awesome! I'd love to attend a Festivus party!

  • The Festivus party sounds awesome! I would be pretty pumped about attending one.

No party hosting for us. We don't really have enough friends here to make it a "party."

  • My book club does a cookie exchange. As much as love throwing parties, I am avoiding them this year.

That's so sad! Come out to Seattle and you can come to our party!
I do understand about the friends thing though. It's only in the last 4 years (thank you, Knot & Nest!) that I actually have a group of friends now. And it wasn't because I moved, I've been in this area for 25 years. :)

  • I have an annual holiday party with about 30 people. This year, we are skipping it although I hate to do so. We just moved and the kids are at that age where entertaining is tough.

    Next year for sure.

  • My DH really wants to put up a Festivus pole. ?Who will be pinned as a feat of strength??

I wish we could have a party, but we're having family come and go all December, so I really don't have the time/energy Sad. ?Maybe next year when we are in our own flat Smile?

I believe that the tradition states the host will challenge various guests to pin him to the floor. Apparently, Festivus is over ONLY when said guests can pin the host. This oculd make for a very long party if the host is strong. :)

  • We always do New Year's with about 50 of our closest friends, lol.  No other holiday plans, but we do a Cinco de Mayo/Kentucky Derby party every year too (we go through a lot of mint!)

Us too :( I love hosting and we have a great house for hosting - we just don't know enough people here to warrant a party.

  • Yup, I have a tree-trimming party every year!  It has gotten fancier as the years go on (I had my first when I was 26, i think), and it's been really fun.  Friends bring ornaments each year, and it's just such a lovely tradition with my friends.  I always think, "oh, Amy gave me this a few years ago!" as we're unpacking the ornaments.  I love it.

I just posted, asking for help on food stuff, but we're sticking with the "signature cocktail, wine, and seasonal beer + hors d'oeurves" theme that we did last year.  It's easier than manning a full bar, and who doesn't love cranberry gin and tonics?  If so, more for me :-D

ETA: we're in a small apartment, and we had about 40 people packed into the place last year!  It was very crowded, but fun!

  • We had a big election party, so we are sort of partied-out.  I'd like to do something though...maybe a New Years Brunch for a few friends or something.  My husband's birthday is in mid-December so maybe we'll have a few friends over for a seasonal dinner party.
  • DH would love a Festivus party. We have 2 couples/sets of friends that are just as obsessed with Seinfeld as us, so I'll have to stow that idea away for some future holiday season. As for this year, no parties for me, DH hates entertaining in our condo.

Just to be clear, I'm pretty sure that the challenge is only real if your DH screams it at whomever he is challenging. ?
