Ouch, taxes...

I did our taxes last night...  This is the first tax year in forever that DH's income hasn't been at least partly subjected to a combat zone exclusion.

Man, that makes a difference!

Sadly, we owe this year, but, thankfully, not very much.  I've never had to file taxes before where I (we) owed!

Re: Ouch, taxes...

  • Fun times! The first time we filed jointly was (of course) after we were married; and he was deployed. Imagine our shock when we ended up owing well over a $1k. He used to joke that he was marrying me for the tax write-off; that didn't turn out so well.  LoL

Since then, we've never really gotten a whole lot back either - but I'm happy to be getting a return rather than having to pay again.

as my mom, who does taxes, would say: that means you've adjusted your withholdings well. lol.

    Audette- owing sucks!

True about the withholdings.  We are considering modifying one of our withholdings, but aren't sure we really need to - the owing part was small (<$600), and mostly due to some unexpected dividend income.  So it's not the end of the world, just not something we're used to.

I'll try to e-file tonight, assuming I can when we owe money.  (as mentioned, this is new for us, so I'm not sure how payment is done when you e-file...  I'll find out tonight...  I'm guessing it's either via authorization to receive payment from our checking account or via credit card, but I really have no idea)

You can e-file when you owe money.  We owed like $63 last year and I was able to e-file.  You are able to set the date that you want them to withdraw the money from your account.  I'm not sure if you can do multiple withdrawals since we just did a one time payment for the small amount.  I scheduled it for a pay day though so I knew the money would be there and didn't have to think about it.

Thanks for sharing this.  That actually sounds fairly simple, and we will easily be able to work with it.  We will also be doing a single payment, so it should be easy.  Yay!

And your mom would be right.

  • Another nice way to look at owing vs. getting a refund is that you didn't give the government an interest free loan last year. Though I can't claim to know if they're organized enough to actually be doing anything with that money before it's refunded to the taxpayer.

My H feels the same way.  He would rather pay in a little every year. I owed a lot last year because my work effed up my with holdings :( This year we owe even more, because I took Money out of my investments to pay off my CC to $0 before we got married, so I came in with $0 debit.

  • Ugh I owed less than $300 to the state, that was obnoxious. Taxes are the worst. Sort of.
