Vegas hotels- Have you ever bid on priceline or hotwire?

We're thinking of going to Vegas in early May. We will be naming our own price for either hotwire or priceline. Looking at 4* and 5* hotels on the strip.

Does anyone know what hotels are included in the 4*/5* hotels?

Any recommendations to try either website?

Re: Vegas hotels- Have you ever bid on priceline or hotwire?

  • Check betterbidding.com for the list of hotels in each star category broken down by geographic area.

I have used Priceline several times for Vegas hotels - have booked Treasure Island, Luxor, and Palazzo that way. I used Hotwire once to book Planet Hollywood.

  • Also check out the Vegas forums on BetterBidding to see what people are winning lately. Especially for rooms around your dates. That's a pretty good indication of which hotels from the list you might end up with.

I've booked two Vegas hotels through either Priceline or Hotwire, and both times I had it narrowed it down from the BetterBidding lists and was more than 50% sure which one I'd get based on past wins. Turns out I was right on both counts. But I made sure I would have been happy with any of the possibilities before I bid.

I'm not sure what is going on the first weekend of May, but I noticed hotel prices seem to be extremely high.  We were looking to book a staycation for late April/early May and I noticed the rates seem to jump that weekend.  Not sure if that's when you are coming or not, just thought I'd throw that out there.

I have booked several 5 star hotels on priceline.  I think the 5 star north strip hotels are Wynn/Encore and Palazzo/Venetian and the 5 star south strip hotels are Aria and Mandalay (may have been downgraded to a 4 or 4.5 on priceline, but can't tell and not sure why??).  Trump is the only 5 star near strip north.  I'd never book a 4 star because there are lots of hotels that are considered 4 star that I think are closer to a 3.  If I'm going to go for a 4 star, I'd use hotwire and try to figure out which hotel it is using betterbidding.com.

  • ditto pps about betterbidding.com

There are way too many 4 stars in Vegas to chance that.  For 5 stars:

North Strip hotels include: Wynn, Venetian, Palazzo, Encore
South Strip includes Aria, Vdara, Bellagio

There are others like the Mandarin Oriental or Cosmopolitan but I haven't seen winning bids on those.  I got Aria last month for $68/night (weekday)

  • I also find that hotwire ratings are more generous than priceline or other sites.  For example, a 4 star on hotwire may be a a 3-3.5 star hotel on other sites.

A rule of thumb that has worked pretty well for me is to expect a winning priceline bid at ~85% of the hotwire price.
