First time 5k question

Hi,

I am running my first 5k in a few weeks - excited and nervous!  I just registered and the registration says "no radio headsets" - I always run with music - I would have a hard time running without it.  Does that mean I can't use my ipod and headphones?  What are "radio headsets"?  Has anyone that is used to running with music run a race without it?  Thanks!!

Re: First time 5k question

  • I highly doubt you'll have a hard time running w/o music during your first 5K. There's bound to be a lot going on! Branch out a little and try running without for a few runs between now and then. It won't hurt anything. And yes, I trained for my first marathon with an iPod but didn't use it once during the race. And I lived to tell the tale. Since then, I rarely use music unless I'm on the treadmill.
  • I have always brought along my music regardless of the rules. I feel that listening to fast paced music helps me to get a better time in a shorter race like a 5K. Just be extra careful and considerate of those around you. If you need to swerve a bit to get around someone or pull off to the side, just make sure to check behind you and to your sides before doing so. I think that as long as you up your game as far as running etiquette goes, then I wouldn't worry about it! I will oftentimes wait to start my music until the runners have thinned out a bit and I don't feel like others are nipping at my heels.

  • I'd have a harder time if I couldn't use my ipod too.  And I would also question the rules you posted.  I don't know if it even means you can't have music.
  • Technically it is against the rules to run with an ipod but a lot of people still use them during a race. However, if you win a category, they can disqualify you because of this.

Like PP said, just be considerate. Keep the volume fairly low so you can hear what is going on you. GL!
