Peru - Machu Picchu

My friend is going to Peru for her honeymoon and they want to hike Machu Picchu.  I thought I recalled reading a long post(s) about the current troubles with reserving tickets for the hike and them being sold out from under them or people showing up with tickets and not being able to hike as they exceeded their quota of tourists already...

can you link that to me - or if you went can you tell me your experience?

I have another friend that hiked Chocoquierrau (sp?) near there instead of MP and loved it.  anyone heard of this trail/ruins?  Thanks much!!!

Re: Peru - Machu Picchu

  • I hiked Chocoquierau (sp) about a year and a half ago. It was a really cool hike and we were the only people in our group and had the ruins all to ourselves. We were able so talk to a lot of local people, which was really neat.  It is a very different city than Machu Picchu, but I'm really glad we saw both.  One big thing is that it was an extremely difficult hike and we hike almost every weekend.  I the hike has 4 5k foot climbs and they are tough! Machu Picchu is a much easier hike.   Make sure your friend books through a reputable tour operator.
  • My friend just went to Machu Picchu last week and she said she had no issues with the tickets (I know that ticket issue had me worried about planning a trip there).

  • We just booked a trip to hike the Inca Trail.  I have been doing  a lot of research on the trail lately and haven't read anything along the lines of permits sold out from under people.  I know they did lower the number of people allowed on the trails, so it is a good idea to reserve your permits several months ahead of time.  You also have to (or at least we had to) submit your passport information at the time your purchase your permits, so no one else can actually use your permit.

We just booked with Peru Treks after a couple of good recs for them here, and good recs other places.  They seem to have a pretty good ethical policy.  They promise to fully reimburse your trip cost or move you to another departure date if permits aren't available for the day you want.  I would just tell your friend to be sure she goes with a reputable company.

  • We had no issues. The number is limited so you must pre-buy your tickets. There is no substitutions allowed, the passport number must match.

You can check out my trip review here

  • its best just to book ahead to make sure you get tickets for the day you want to go

we went with intrepid (GAP) and it was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!
