Do you apply eyeliner before or after eye shadow?

I always put eyeliner on BEFORE my eye shadow.  I was half asleep this morning and realized that I had applied everything except my eyeliner.  I applied if afterward and I think I liked it better!  So out of curiosity...do you apply eyeliner before or after eye shadow.  Is there a "rule?"

I apply it after my shadow, but it does contaminate the pencil with shadow and make it a bit less easy to apply until I sharpen it again.

  • i always do it after. i don't like how putting eye shadow on after makes my liner look duller and not as sharo. with my eye shape, i need eyeliner!

  • When I wear liner I always apply it after my shadow, but I only wear it on my upper lid.  I usually wear liquid liner.
  • Funny, you posted this.  I did the exact same thing today, and put my shadow on first, then liner.  I did it on purpose thinking I may get better results with my liner smudging and I liked the results better too!

  • Definitely after
  • After.

    This.

  • After.  I feel like if I put it on before my shadow, it would be invisible.

I think it depends on the formulation of the products and the look you're trying to achieve. I use pencil liner, and I apply powder eyeshadow (on purpose) directly on top of that, to "set" it, smudge it slightly, and blend it out to infinity. If I was looking for a severe line, I'd use liquid eyeliner on top of my eyeshadow.

  • After...never even thought about putting it on before...
  • After on my eyelid but before on my lower lash line (I set my bottom eyeliner with a matching eyeshadow like NB posted above).
  • Most makeup artists apply eyeliner first and then use the eyeshadow on top to help it "set".

  • I apply liquid liner on top of shadow, and pencil liner under shadow - only because I smudge the pencil and then layer dark shadow on top of it.  The shadow keeps it from running and if I do the pencil then smudge, my eyeshadow rubs off.

  • I usually do after like most pp's.
  • I used to do it under all the time and lately I've been doing it over, but it really depends on the look I want. If I want a crisper more defined line, I do it after. If I want the smudgy look I do it before.
  • I apply it after my shadow
  • I use gel liner before my eye shadow, then I use a pencil liner after the shadow, then I smudge the pencil liner. I find that applying the eye shadow over the gel liner helps soften the line a bit so it doesn't look so sharp.

  • either, depending on the look I want. before if I want to soften up the liner with the shadow on top. after if I want a definite line. also, my gel and liquid liners are always applied on top of shadow.

  • I only use pencil or shadows that you make liquid with a brush and I apply them before the eyeshadow. I like a more muted makeup look and I like that the shadow blends it in a lot.

Very, very rarely I'll go back and add some over the shadow, but that's only if I'm going out.

    Same here.

  • after shadow.

If i have to touch up my shadow for some reason then I touch up liner after as well.

  • Both! I put my eyeliner on first, so I have a guide for my shadow. Then I touch it up and make it darker as necessary.

This.  I have to have eyeliner on and if I put it on before eyeshadow it just looks duller and makes me look different.
