40th Birthday Experience Trip

So, my boyfriend is turning 40 and would like a super cool experience trip.  We travel a lot, but this one I am stuck on.  He's done the pyramids, Dubai, much of Europe.  Ideas?  It's in 6 weeks.  We have lots of miles, so let your imaginations run wild.  It could also be a restaurant somewhere in the world you've wanted to try.

Thanks for the help!

Re: 40th Birthday Experience Trip

  • Machu Picchu is amazing. South Island of New Zealand for some adventure sports? Scuba trip to the Great Barrier Reef? What does your boyfriend like to do??

  • I've done MaccuPicchu but he hasn't, so that is on his list, but don't think he has the time this trip.  New Zealand and Australia would be perfect, but I'm thinking time could be still be an issue.  He is on a project in Europe right now and can maybe get 4 days off to go somewhere.  So, I know that limits ideas, but I think he wants some amazing experience.

He's done most of the middle east, we've been to India.  This is what is making it a tough experience.

I thought about golfing at St. Andrews in Scotland, but he'd be by himself since I don't gold and I don't think that would be too fun.

  • 4 days from somewhere in Europe?  I am assuming that this includes travel time, right?  With that amount of time I'd stick to somewhere easy to get to from Europe.  Morocco, Israel, Jordan, etc., if you're looking for somewhat of an exotic location.

What about going to a major sporting event?  Does he like anything for which there is a major tournament going on within a few hours flight from where ever he is around his birthday?  Six Nations/Euro 2012/Grand National/Le Mans/the F1 race in Monaco?  If he's at all into motor racing a trip to the Grand Prix in Monaco or the 24 hour race in Le Mans are pretty much once in a lifetime events.

Would he be interested in something like spending a few days on the Trans-Siberian Railway?

  • Morocco and staying in a sweet riad somewhere? Cappodocia, Turkey and a hot air balloon ride? I also love Croatia, but I'm guessing he's been there.

  • Istanbul!
2012 Races: Mar 24: Great Human Race 5K. April 28: 5K for Fitness
  • japan

U.S. national park (yellowstone, yosemite, etc.)

    tahiti

  • just saw your post regarding your european starting point and 4-day limit.

    i'm thinking my suggestions won't work :)

    what about scandinavia?

  • Thanks for all the ideas.  He's done the middle east, was on a project in Israel for over a year, so took weekends to explore the area.  Is currently in Scandanavia on this project....  I like the idea of a sporting event and will do some research to see what might be coming up.

He hasn't done Croatia or Venice (I have, but not a big deal) so I think those might be options.  I also suggested St. Petersburg bc I think Russia would be amazing for a few days.

     Appreciate the help!

  • We actually were just in Istanbul in January, otherwise that would totally be on the list!
  • There are a few 3 or 4 day cruises in Norway to see the Northern Lights. I think they would still be running in April. Has he been to Iceland? The Blue Lagoon is fantastic -- I wouldn't mind spending my birthday there.

  • What about Madeira Island, Portugal?  It's on our big trip list since my family is from there.  They have some great hotels and the people are very friendly.  You could stay up in the hills or near the beach on the island.  It's not a common Portuguese destination.  If you didn't want to go to that area a Portuguese Pousada could be fun too.  Most of those are off the beaten path.
  • what about staying in a small village in tuscany for that time? do some cooking classes/winery visits? with only 4 days it's limiting but that's a damn good time!! it's not an 'adventure' but it's certainly memorable and can be a really nice trip.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • I wouldn't bank on the Northern Lights in 6 weeks. Early May is pretty late in the season for that, and up around the bank of highest activity, it won't even get dark any longer (just 4 hours of dusk). Alternatively, you could fly up to Longyearbyen and see the Midnight Sun!

Or you could visit the Norwegian fjords. It's a bit early in the season, but if you don't mind cooler weather. Especially if you're into hiking, kayaking, etc.

How about St.Petersburg or Moscow? It might be a rush to get the visas, but you could do the visa-free ferry trip from Finland.

Wine touring in Bordeaux or Luxembourg or Germany or Hungary or Spain?

I'd also throw in another vote for Jordan. Or Morocco. Or Tunisia (is he a Star Wars fan? The Tatooine film set is actually a tourist destination).

  • How about go to Monte-Carlo and stay in the Hotel de Paris?  There is an Alain Duccasse restaurant onsite.  I've never been there, but it looks like the ultimate in luxury!  Your could rent a sweet convertible and he can pretend to be James Bond. :)

Or maybe see the Taj Mahal?

  • I would stay at La Bandita in Southern Tuscany.  From there, you can do wine tastings, visit beautiful hill towns and take a cooking class.  We stayed there for 6 nights as part of a trip to Italy in 2010.  I did a day to day review of the trip here: http://willtravelforfoodandwine.blogspot.com/

Just sitting out looking at the hills and hearing the sheep bells is magical. I've considered going there for my 40th, but its in February, when they are closed.

  • Personally, given all your requirements, I'd look at taking a ferry to St Petersburg. I took a ferry from Tallinn-Helsinki last year and it was really fun - it was in March so the ocean was totally iced over, so cool! I saw that you could then take a ferry to St Petersburg and have wanted to do it ever since. If neither of you have been to Russia, that's a huge bonus!

  • I love the idea of Russia as neither of us have been there.  I'm going to do some research on that option. For my own big birthday, eating fabulous food and drinking great wine in Tuscany will be on the top of the list
