Washing Laminate and Vinyl Floors

Our place has laminate and vinyl flooring. I have a bottle of cleaner for them that is pretty much empty and my floors need to be cleaned badly. Other than buying another bottle of this expensive cleaner, does anyone know of a way to properly clean laminate and vinyl flooring? TIA!

Re: Washing Laminate and Vinyl Floors

  • Those are pretty durable floor types. I think pretty much anything would work.

  • We were told not to use water on them so that really limits my options. I have cheated and used a wet rag to spot clean and a spray bottle with water in it to damp mop, but the floors are in need of a deeper clean! I am hoping to find an alternative to the expensive "hard surface cleaner" stuff that came with the floors. If anyone knows of one, please let me know! TIA!
  • I'm not sure on the laminate.

However, on the vinyl like a pp said..anything goes.

I rotate between dishsoap and vinegar water and Murphy's oil soap. Sometimes on my Swiffer/Libman freedom mop other times on my hands and knees.

  • I buy specific cleaner for laminate floors and use it sparingly so I don't get the floors too wet. Is the stuff you had before Bona? That's a common brand, but it's not the only one out there, so you can look for a cheaper version. I just buy a "laminate floor cleaner" at whatever store I'm at and I have a microfiber mop I bought at Target to use it with.

Laminate floor cleaner IS more expensive than the cleaner I buy for my tile/vinyl flooring, but I also don't need to use it very often. Our laminate floor looks fine with just a sweeping 99% of the time.

Just search on Amazon for "laminate floor cleaner" and you'll find a ton of options.

  • I use this spray mop with a water/vinegar solution.  The floors dry w/in a couple minutes.  I used to be a bucket and rag on my hands and knees type of floor cleaner, but not any more.

  • Hmm, I've never heard not to use water on laminate floors. I just use a wet swiffer mop.

Yes, we have been using the Bona floor cleaner. I love the mop, but am going to look up some of these suggestions!

Thanks for all of the good ideas!

  • We use a swiffer mop. As far as the comments about water/wetting...vinyl floors should definatly be able to hold up to water...if it doesnt thats some ancient vinyl, for laminate...its built to be durable these days...15 years ago getting them wet would have been a huge no no because of quality...these days, its not such a big deal, as long as your not pouring buckets of water on it or letting a drain create a pool of water...some water to clean shouldnt be a problem. Vinigar solutions seem to work well too.
