What do you miss the most about your hometown/country?
Or even what do you miss about the last country you lived in.
I miss the weather, especially now that it's Spring and I'm biologically tuned for a change of weather, which isn't going to happen for at least another month.
I miss seeing my teacher and driving my car.
I also miss underwear, pizza and gelato alla nocciola (ok, Grom is good but I'm not going to drop eight bucks on their small cup!).
Re: What do you miss the most about your hometown/country?
Selective family members and the activities I used to do with them, specifically taking walks around the neighborhood with my mom, doing day trips with my dad, and just generally hanging out with my sister.
Watching my 'niece' (actually a cousin) grow up.
Living in a LCOL area.
Volunteering for an academic high school organization.
The ease of customer service, like calling at 2am on a Saturday (when I'm in a different time zone) and getting a capable human being.
Online shopping.
Drip coffee.
Midwestern friendliness, politeness, and openness.
Being able to leave doors unlocked, purses out in the open, walking freely at night.
Target.
Mexican food.
Wheat Thins.
Target.
Aw, I too have two "nieces" that are really cousins. They're my cousin's daughters and have always called me auntie. Since I'm an only child I figured I won't have another chance at being an aunt
From Canada: my family, friends, cottage and poutine
From Vietnam: Pho, my house and garden, my career, friends, great vacations, our motorbike, I could go on, and on, and on...

Aside from people,
Having driving as an option;
As I'm having pregnancy cravings, food... this week Olive Garden's salad dressing;
Better weather.
There is one in Victoria- in Geelong- not normally a tourist stop but if you ever come to Melbourne and take a drive down the coast you can swing by and fufil the need
all I REALLY miss anymore is the people, I miss the help I know I'd have with dd if my Mom & Aunts were nearby *sigh*
amazon.com & target I really miss though too!!
Mexican Food. I am seriously missing good Mexican Food -- not authentic, more Tex-Mex, but even Tex-Mex is hard to come by here. And I find I can't even get the ingredients to make decent substitutes.
I also miss the traditions of the city. Life in NOLA is a very structured social and cultural calendar, and I miss the seasons -- from Carnival to Christmas, I miss those rituals and routines. I find the area where I am has no real sense of community and no real communal traditions. I miss being a part of that fabric.
The Food!!! ... fresh bread every morning, pate, confit, yogurts, cheese...
From NY: easy access to public transportation
I'm almost there too, it's really just the people that I miss - but I miss them a lot and it's getting harder for me to be so far away.
Mexican food and wings. We eat wings like every day when we're in the states.

From the US:
- any/all ethnic foods. I love German Food, but ethnic food done by/for Germans is just nastiness. I cried at the local Italian Place (run by an Italian) because the sauce was so bland. And do not get me stated on Thai or Sushi....
- I miss late and full weekend hours for stores. Work days, even for SAHMs are busy and it helps to be able to run to Lowes or the dry cleaners on the weekends or after dinner.
- I miss the activities for kids. Even though we have some options through the base, it is a first come/first serve world with very limited options. And winter time is even worse. My daughter LOVES dance and gymnastics and art classes and swimming, etc. And I love doing those things WITH her. But there is not a lot of things to choose from here.
What I will miss from Germany when we leave:
- I will miss the agrarian (sp?) lifestyle. Monkey and I can walk to feed sheep, cows and horses. We can go to the local wildlife park year round and feed deer, goats, elk, bears and watch the raptors fly and the wolf pack run around.
- I will miss the relative safety of the neighborhoods. I love the fact that the kindergarten aged kids can walk to school over here. I did that 35 years ago...but we would never allow DD to do that back at home.
- I will miss the fresh and healthy foods here. I CANNOT BEGIN TO EXPRESS MY LOVE for the "no corn syrup" and no additives laws over here. I buy more foods on the economy for the health issues. DH and I have already begun to bemoan our food bill come next fall. We are going to spend SOO much more on organics....
- I will miss the topography (though not the weather) of my little part of Germany. I love the hills and valleys and forrests.
- I love being able to drive 30 min and be in another country with a totally different language and culture. I love that Monkey got just a little taste of that.
If we could ahve stayed 2 more years, it would have been perfect. But that is not to be...
From the US; Aside from a few food stuffs, I REALLY miss Pay at the Pump gas stations. I mean really really miss it. I am annoyed every single time I have to walk into a service station. Let me just pay and get on with my life.
From France: O.M.G I miss the bread, the cheeses, the pastries, the wines! I miss the markets and the churches and culture around every corner. I miss being able to go to Italy for dinner just because we can.
From home, I miss being able to visit my best friend for a weekend.
From China, I miss the diversity of great Chinese food (Beijing duck, refreshingly-spicy Sichuan cuisine, dumplings, cumin-packed Xinjiang dishes, dim sum, gong bao jiding, di san xian, etc). I miss being able to have a guy deliver dinner to my door in 20 minutes for $2. I miss haggling over stupid stuff in the market. I miss having a full-body massage twice a week. I miss the positive reinforcement for trying to speak the language. I miss the adventure. (There's a lot of stuff I don't miss, too!)
I miss my family and my friends. I find it really hard to make friends here and I'm realizing how blessed I was back home with some amazing friends. At least I do have my in-laws only a couple hours away (blessing and a curse sometimes, ha!).
Other than that, I only miss Target- Australia's version just makes me want to cry every time I go in.
I agree about Australia's version of Target, but Big W and K-Mart aren't too bad here.
Good to know! Thanks.
I SO SO miss pay at the pump too - I never buy anything in the gas stations here - so why can't we just have frickin pay at the pump??? annoying
How could I forget about pay at the pump? Yes, I do miss that too!
From Texas I miss Tex Mex, all the activities for families/children in my town, the wildflowers, having a bathtub and oven
What I will miss from Vietnam- mostly the amazing friends we have made here, living by the beach, the laid back lifestyle, our motorbike, getting fresh fruits and vegetables for next to nothing..I had our first baby here, so it will always hold a special place in our hearts.
