Eyeliner for newbs...

so I'm a cover up and lip gloss only girl... I have had issues with eyeliner pencils because... I suck at applying them? I'm afraid I'll poke my eye (which is ridiculous because I wear contacts)?  I don't even know anymore.

I'm experimenting with a more feminine style lately, and I'm thinking of adding eyeliner into my daily makeup routine.  Is liquid liner easier?

Rec your liner and/or tutorial please and thanks :)

Re: Eyeliner for newbs...

  • In my opinion, I think that pencil is easier than liquid for a beginner, because liquid is sometime more slick and harder to draw a straight line with (at least for me).  I also think it you like to keep it simple, it's easier to make a subtle look with a pencil.  I use Lorac 3-in-1 Waterproof Pencil and really like it.

I don't know this kid or this monkey, but their side-eyes are strong.

  • I use gel eyeliner and I really like it. I have Maybelline "Eye Studio" liner, it comes in a little glass pot with a separate brush to apply it. I personally think it gives you more control over the intensity. I have issues with eyeliner too, I haven't used my pencil liner in months, and I never could get liquid liner right. This is super easy to use. I apply it to my top lid only with a shimmery brown shadow and black mascara, very low-key and pretty.

  • I like my 24/7 pencil. I hold the skin of my eyelid taut, and trace from the inner to the outer eye. I'll often use little strokes as well, instead of going straight across (makes the line look more even).

Honestly, the best thing to do is practice.

  • When I first started using liner I sucked at it so I would just buy lighter colored ones, browns and gold. As I got better I moved up to black but I still have never used liquid. I do also love the 24/7 eyeliner pencils but if you want to go budget and just to experiment wet and wild does a decent job. When I apply it I actually start in the middle of my eyelid above my pupil and go to the outer corner then I go to the inner corner of my eye and match my line to the middle. I do this because the way I wear my liner I like having it a little thicker at the outside of my eye.

Here's a tutorial video for winged liner but it has some good overall tips for liner application.

  • I find liquid liner pretty difficult to work with and definitely would not recommend it for an eyeliner newbie.  I also use the Maybelline Eye Studio gel liner and was surprised at how easy it is to apply.
  • I really like this L'Oreal Cream Liner.  I use an arced eyeliner brush like this to apply it.  I like to start roughly in the center of my pupil(as already mentioned) and move out, then from the inner eye to meet the center.  The thickest part of my line is always in the center of my eye...just a personal preference.  Last, I smudge the line so it has a softer appearance.  Good luck!

  • I suck at applying eyeliner as well.  I love Urban Decay's 24/7 eyeliners and MAC Pearlglide.  Both go on super smooth and even I cant screw them up!

  • I also do not recommend liquid for a newbie. I also like my Urban Decay liners and Clinique Cream liners and quickliner.
  • I have oily skin and even with a great primer, I can't get pencils to stay put and not look like a 3 year old put them on.  I got Stila's Stay All Day liquid liner and so far I love it.  It's like a pen so it's not as messy, it LITERALLY stays all day and is a lot easier for me to apply.  There is also less expensive drug-store options but I'd totally recommend this over a pencil.
  • I find both liquid and the pots that you have to use a brush with to be harder than a pencil.

My rec is the Clinique quickliner.  The new intense quick liners are really easy to use, and you only need a tiny bit because they really are more intense than other liners.  They have a smudging sponge tip on the other end that makes blending much easier.

  • Thanks all!  I'll let you know how it goes!
  • I love eyeliner, and consider myself pretty good at it. I use pencil to line my lash line on top and bottom b/c it's easier. However, I feel like my pencil doesn't stay as well as gel or liquid. Gel is easier for most people, and has a great lasting power. However now that I've started using liquid, I could never go back, I still use pencil for my lash lines, but for my upper lid I have to have liquid.

The trick with liquid is to get the excess of the brush, and make quick strokes back and forth to your desired thickness. Also, you don't wanna open your eyes real wide right away or it'll get on your lid. Give it a minute or two and it'll be fine.

  • I like the liquid liner in the pen/marker form. Maybe it's my steady hand, but I find that almost as easy as pencil, because you can get it precise and not smudgy (and I'm all about even, fine line cat eyes). I do love the 24/7 pencils from Urban Decay, or Too Faced colored pencils if you go that route though.
