T-TTC ladies... have a question (C/P on bump)

Hiya,

Just in case anyone here can help...basically asking about private testing and if it's worth it.

Re: T-TTC ladies... have a question (C/P on bump)

  • I did some testing on the NHS and it was worth the wait for a few tests, but the ones below I have paid for (and am now going entirely private):

Female fertility profile 2 (FHS, LH, prolactin, TSH, oestradiol, testosterone, thyroxine) - $210 - the NHS never offered to do this for me
    AMH test - $60 - also important

The FHS & AMH are two tests which will give you a lot of info about your ability to get pregnant and respond to IVF or other drugs.  The other tests will help to see if you can hold a pregnancy.

Another test which might be worth getting privately would be a scan to see how many follicles you have (I think I did that on day 3 of entire cycle).

The SA that they did for my DH didn't show a few difficulties that he actually has (we had it done again privately), so ask them if they check for anti-sperm antibodies when they read the results (you might want to call the clinic now about that).  I did get a HSG test on the NHS (dye through fallopian tubes) which was a very important thing to see.

I would ask the clinic where you are being referred to if they will accept the testing - usually it has to be within 3 months of the start of consults & treatment...so you may want to hold off on the private stuff until you have a better idea of when you'll get to see the NHS doctors.

  • I am not expert on this topic but this is just my two cents. First I would make an apt. ASAP with the other doctor just so you know exactly how long you actually have to wait. Maybe you can ask when you call, if there is anyway of getting an apt. before. If somebody cancels their apt., do they give it anyway to somebody else?

Then about going with private testing, I would also consider my mental health. How will you feel if you have to wait 4+ months? 750 is a lot of money, but if you have it to spend, maybe it is a good investment. Maybe, everything will come back okay, but I wouldnt look at it as wasting your money because you would have answers. However, if something came back and there is something wrong, do you have money to pay for more tests?

    Good Luck !!!

  • Sorry I have no advice, but I may have similar questions in the near future so I want to be able to find this post again.

    Good luck!

  • For us we were lucky and our insurance covered our IF journey, but DH and I did decide we would have done the same comprehensive testing even if we had to pay out of pocket. We thought this because it would determine what route we would take. If one of the tests had been positive it may have made us skip the IUI's, which are additional money and time and waiting, and we were then prepared to go right to IVF.

It is really a personal choice and I wish you the best.

  • The second panel seems to me to be the one to have done. Why is the transvag. ultrasound so expensive? My regular gyno did them here for 60 Euros or so. I don?t know if your GP has the option of doing something like that for you, but you could see about going in before O to see how many follicles you have or confirm ovulation if you went after.

I would be inclined to do the second panel after you?ve gotten the results of the SA back, and take it from there. But that?s just my 2 cents.

  • Absolutely I would do it!
