WWH&FD? To race or not to race; that is the question!

I'm planning to run my first post knee surgery race (a local 5K) with my little sister tomorrow morning!  My SIL is due with our baby niece today.  She has not yet gone into labor, but who knows what will happen over the next 24 hours.

If she has the baby tonight, we'll go welcome her this evening (assuming we can still visit).  Would you still race in the morning?  Or would that make me a bad SIL because I should be up and in the hospital first thing the next morning to visit?

If she does not have the baby tonight, and goes into labor tonight or tomorrow, would you still race in the morning?  Or would you be waiting at the hospital for her arrival?

Disclaimer: SILs first baby came nearly a month early, and her Dr said this one would likely come early, so I honestly thought she'd be here by now and I would not be in this situation.

Re: WWH&FD? To race or not to race; that is the question!

  • I would totally still race.

She could be in labor for hours, and since it's only a 5k, it's not like you'll be gone all day.  Do your race and go see her afterwards if the baby is here.  Unless she's seriously high maintenence I don't think she'll mind if you come after your race.

  • I would totally race but I'm also in the camp that you give the new family some time to get acquainted before descending on them to visit.  Plus, most hospitals have visiting hours that start later in the morning.  I think that if she has the baby tonight or even tomorrow, you will have plenty of time to race, get cleaned up and go meet the new arrival.
  • Whew!  OK.  Glad to hear the first few responses.  DH thinks we should be there and spend the entire weekend with his family like we did when our nephew was born.  I didn't see any issue with racing (even if she is in labor tomorrow morning, because it's not like we could do anything other than wait).

Also, I hosted her baby shower, so I like to think I'm a good SIL. ;)

  • I would definitely still race.

  • I"d race.

and if I was your SIL I'd want you to race and not worry about me regardless of when I went into labor/had the baby!

  • race it.
