Alcatraz- day or night tour?

Any suggestions? I'm leaning towards the night tour.

Re: Alcatraz- day or night tour?

  • If I had it to do over again I'd do the night tour. What's most important is that you do the self-guided audio tour.

Then yo ass git a all-expenses paid cruise ta tha Mediterranean n' yo ass git ta hook up Jared Padalecki on tha flight over while bustin yo' jammies. But still no medal.
  • I've done both and I don't really see why people are always recommending the night tour over the day one.  Honestly, I think I preferred the day tour if only because then you can catch a return ferry like every 15 minutes and explore at your own pace.  With the night tour, there's only one return ferry option.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I LOVED the Alcatraz tour!  I did it during the day, but I imagine it would be cool at night.  One perk though of the daytime tour is the view of the city from the island.  But if I'm back in San Fran again, I'd take the night tour.

  • I've only done the night tour, which had a nice eeriness to it. They also opened up the hospital upstairs for us to look into, I don't know if they always to that during the day. After the self guided tour, they encouraged us to attend one of several range led talks, so we did. Then we decided to hit up the gift shop only to find that it has closed already. I wish they would have informed us to visit the shop by x time b/c then we would have skipped the talk. Not a big deal, but it was a bummer.
  • I've done the daytime one twice now, but I really want to do the night tour, extra creepy! lol.  And pp says they let you see the hospital for the night tour, ooooo Surprise.

Whichever one you end up doing though, the self-guided audio tour is a must!  Oh, and make sure you book in advance, like at least 2 weeks.

  • I've done both twice and the nght tour is much better but remember to bring something warm- it gets cold out there especially if the fog comes in.

Also make sure you ask the guides when you arrive what time the medical wing opens. I missed it on 3 out of 4 tours as they only open it for about 20 minutes. It is well worth the visit.

  • loved alcatraz! i did the day tour b/c i had my dc w/ me who was 7 months at the time. but i would think the night one would be really cool. the day one was awesome. i was fascinated by it. enjoy!
  • I've done both too, and I would say pick the one that best fits into your schedule. The night tour was good, but I think it wasn't anything amazing over the day tour. I did the night tour in May and it was still a little light out for the tour so it wasn't incredibly eery or anything... just a lot colder! Definitely dress warm if you do the night one, but if the day tour fits better in your schedule, I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's really not too much different/better (in my opinion).
  • I like night because we got to see sunset over the Golden Gate from Alcatraz. Well worth it to me, but of course time of year will affect whether you'll see it. Pics at the end here:  http://www.emilyinchile.com/2009/07/alcatraz/.
  • I've only done the night tour and it was really cool. It definitely has an eeriness to it! Dress warm. Get the audio tour. I missed the hospital wing.
