New to tea - oolong varieties

I'm working on trying new things.  I've read that tea has some health benefits and some help aid in weight loss.  Does anyone drink tea on a regular basis?  I would like a sweeter tea that I don't need to add sweetener to.  Recommend some please.

Re: New to tea - oolong varieties

  • I've been loving tea over winter, and I don't usually add anything to it. I got a Yogi tea (purple box) for Christmas, and it seems to have a lot of natural sweetness to it -almost too sweet for me. The other more sweet tea I like is Celestial Seasonings "Dragon Tamer." Hope you find something you like!

  • I am a serious green tea drinker.  I drink 24-36oz of Japanese SENCHA green tea from Uji region of Japan every morning, 4 hours until I take any vitamin supplements.  I buy the tea loose from our Central Market, at a pretty price.  I use 1 heaing teaspoon in 160-degree water for 1 minute, and the tea is good to be blanched again another time or two.  I have a themometer and check the water temp.  I add juice of a fresh lemon to enhance the antioxidants.  I get my tea at Central Market, but this link has good information.  It is not bitter nor sweet.  Just right.  I have not been sick for years, not even a cold.

    Benefits of green tea
There are four primary polyphenols in green tea and they are often collectively referred to as catechins.
Powerful antioxidants, catechins have been shown in recent studies to fight viruses, slow aging, and have a beneficial effect on health. Clinical tests have shown that catechins destroy free radicals and have far-reaching positive effects on the entire body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules and fragments of molecules that can damage the body at the cellular level leaving the body susceptible to cancer, heart disease and other degenerative diseases.

    EGCG is a potent antioxidant.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), an antioxidant found in green tea, is at least 100 more times more effective than vitamin C and 25 times more effective than vitamin E at protecting cells and DNA from damage believed to be linked to cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses. This antioxidant has twice the benefits of resveratrol, found in red wine.

    Special benefits of green tea

    • Reduces high blood pressure.  Drinking green tea represses angiotensin II which leads to high blood pressure.

    • Lowers blood sugar. Green tea polyphenols and polysaccharides are effective in lowering blood sugar.

    • Fights cancer. There have been many studies that have shown that green tea catechins are effective at preventing cancer.

Green tea benefits the immune system because of its high concentrations of polyphenols and flavenoids.

Green tea antioxidants have been shown to lower cholesterol.
Citizens of Uji and Shizuoka, where we get our teas (and where most green tea in Japan is harvested) have among the lowest rates of cancer in the world. They drink more high quality green tea, per capita,  than residents of any other region in Japan.

    • High grade green teas contain more polyphenols than ordinary teas. They are also delicious!

    • Unfermented green tea leaves are the least processed form of tea. Drinking green tea from 100% quality tea leaves is the most natural way to obtain these health benefits.

  • I wouldn't count on tea to help you lose weight. Drink it because you enjoy it.
  • I echo Sadlebred, tea should be am immune booster not a weight loss product.

I just started drinking Yogi Echinacea tea, it is very yummy, no need to add anything sweet.

I mainly want to drink it because of the health benefits it has to offer.  But there are so many out there.....I wasn't sure where to start.  That's why I asked the question.
