DH and I are looking to vacation in Wisconsin this summer. We live in Michigan and wanted a road trip, but wanted to expand our horizons past MI (we've both travelled there pretty extensively).
Right now, we're looking to visit Door County and/or the Wisconsin Dells. Anyone have information/opinions on either? Or, is there something else in Wisconsin we should make sure to visit or see?
Re: Wisconsin?
Love both! The Dells is a really fun place, but there are TONS of kids. There is a lot of adult activities (gotta get a swig at nigs!) but most is geared towards kids. If you have kids, I would have you go here instead of DC.
We went to DC every year when I was a kid. We had a family cabin on the lake and it was amazing. There isn't AS much to do, but it has such a cute little town and the beaches are pretty too!
Ditto about avoiding the Dells during the summer unless you don't mind all the kids.
I have tons of friends from Illinois and Wisconsin who love Door County and have gone both during summer and winter.
Not sure if you're only looking for something relaxing, but it might be cool to stop in Milwaukee. It's a really laid back city that's not expensive and still fun. I really want to check out this boutique hotel that was highly rated last year. http://www.cntraveler.com/hotels/north-america/united-states/iron-horse-hotel-milwaukee-milwaukee-wisconsin
I've also heard great things about the Kohler's Water Spa in Kohler, WI. I've driven past a few times and think it's not that far north from Milwaukee. (I think the name of the actual hotel/lodge is American Inn)http://www.americanclubresort.com/spa/spa_index.html
And this is another place I looked into going myself. It's in Elkhart Lake and it's maybe 1 to 1 1/2 hours from Milwaukee. I will admit, I usually like a trendier look to a hotel, but this place looks very nice and relaxing. http://www.osthoff.com/
Another ditto on avoiding the dells in the summer. The dells is a weird place to me - the cheese factor is pretty high (lots of wax museum, "fun house" novelty type places).
I love Door Country - but been going there since I was a kid so I'm a bit nostalgic. Some of my favorite places - Al Johnsons for Swedish pancakes (look for the goats on the roof), sunsets at Fred and Fuzzys, shopping in Fish Creek and Ephraim, the Tannenbaum shop, Inn at Kristophers for dinner. There are tons of antique shops and wineries. It's just really cute. I just go there to shop and eat so I'm probably not much help!

We pretty much just shop and eat our way through wherever we vacation : ) so that's good to know!
Definitely a fan of Door County. Loved visiting the wineries in that area.
Hated Wisconsin Dells- Not my style. I thought of it as a tourist trap-lots of t-shirt, fudge shops, kiddie attractions and was over run with kids.
