Kansas City, MO - activity and restaurant recs?

Hi ladies!

Just wondering if you have any recommendations on some fun things to do in Kansas City are and places to eat.  We like to do stuff off the beaten path, but also have never been there so any must-see touristy type things would be great, too.

Thank you!

Re: Kansas City, MO - activity and restaurant recs?

  • I was there in October for a weekend. I really liked the Liberty Museum and Memorial, the Negro Leagues Museum and the Jazz Museum and had some goood snacks at the City Market. We had great drinks at Manifesto in the Art District and good beers at Flying Saucer in the Power and Light District. We had wanted to go to the late night Saturday jazz jam (midnight to 6am or something like that) but were too tired. And we loved the Boulevard Brewing tour.

My best piece of advice - rent a car! We thought between the bus and cabs and the hotel's free shuttle we'd be okay without out one, but getting a cab was difficult at times and the buses didn't seem reliable. After the Jazz Museum we ended up walking for about 45 minutes back to out hotel and at one point not a single car went down the street for a good 20 minutes. Other that RIGHT downtown, KC is not very walkable or public transit friendly.

We stayed with friends, but we liked Oklahoma Joe's BBQ and Jack Stack BBQ.

  • I really liked Pierpont's at Union Station. I thought Jack Stack BBQ was good too. There was also a place in downtown that I can't remember the name of, that had awesome 2-for-1 martinis on Monday nights.

I went before Christmas, so a lot of the activities I did were season-specific (outdoor ice skating, looking at the Plaza lights, etc.)
