How soon after a bad run do you go back out?

I was set to run 9 miles tonight and barely made it through 5 (6 weeks till half).  The temps were really warm (mid 80's - upper 50's is normal) and I think I was dehydrated before I even started.

I'm contemplating going back out tomorrow afternoon to try 9 again but I'm worried I'm setting myself up for failure.

Here are my choices (with pro's/con's):

1)  Go back out and give it another try - temps should be good, should be rehyrdrated, able to run my favorite course

2)  Take tomorrow as a rest day and try again on Sunday - temps should be great, will be rehydrated, rough course to run, will mess up training schedule for next week

Thoughts?  Help me make a decision!

Re: How soon after a bad run do you go back out?

  • Really depends on how I feel.  If I had a bad run because I should have rested instead of running, I'll take a rest day.

If I just had a bad day because I fueled poorly, or my head wasn't in it, or I just had a random bad run, I get out there at the next opportunity.  Otherwise I find myself making excuses to not go.

  • you did half your workout.  I'd just check it off the list and proceed with your next scheduled run.
  • That seems like a long run for a weeknight. I would try to attempt runs like that on a weekend morning. I find that I don't have as much energy at the end of the day for runs like that.

I would try again on Sunday morning.

  • Give it a try tomorrow...if it doesn't work out, go from there.

I had two bad runs this week - running in the heat is tricky if you haven't done it in awhile.  I was really PG last summer so it has been two years since I ran in hot hot weather and I had a hard time this week when the temps went from 40/50 to 80!

  • This happened to me before. It was very hot and I didn't realize it and went for a run. I came back dehydrated and with a migraine headache. I drank tons of water and stopped once I saw an aura and walked back home. I waited a day before running again.
