Awhile ago I talked about switching B's food (at the time it was going to be Canidae), but we ended up getting Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. He seemed to be doing a little better, but now is getting worse again. I made him chicken and rice this morning and he only ate half of it (very unusual). We took him to the vet a couple days ago and he said "just monitor him and if he gets worse take him to the Emergency Vet".. uhh thanks asshat that's what we've been doing.
Anyway, I'm thinking of trying grain free. I think it may be he has pretty bad allergies. What is a cheaper, but good, grain free food. We usually try and get 40lbs bags so we don't really want to be spending $60+ on a bag of food.
The place we go has Hi-Tek Naturals Grain free. I don't know if this is good? link
Thanks guys!
Re: Another dog food question
How long has he been on the current food? Due to the short winter and lack of precipitation, environmental/seasonal allergies are out of control very early this year. Your pup's issues may be environmental, not food related, so solely changing the diet may not do him much good in the short term.
I find that when Rudi's allergies are really bad, he doesn't eat. Just like a human, if his sinuses hurt and he's having breathing issues, chewing and swallowing aren't big priorities.
The ingredients list for Hi-Tek looks fine, but I'd be concerned about potatoes and sweet potatoes being #2 and 3 on the list, because it's likely they outweigh the #1 meat meal ingredient, and obviously potatoes shouldn't be the primary stable in a dog's diet.
In the event your dog's issue is environmental, it might be a good idea to talk to your vet about administering Benadryl or Claritin or some other antihistamine and ask his/her opinion on environmental allergies.
I agree with OJ about the environmental factors.
Missy eats Orijen which is an awesome grain free food, pretty sure she eats better than us.
We get the 5lb bag and doing a quick search the largest bag is around $60-70. Our local place offers a Mil Discount of 20% but looking for coupons is always an option as well.
It's made in Canada but I have had no problems finding it at local pet stores. (Don't even try Petco or Petsmart because they don't even know this brand exists).
Here is a REVIEW
Orijen's website also has a find in stores feature where you can find which stores near you carry it
