Hunger Games Movie Discussion - spoilers
Yes, I saw it already (last night). I am 14.
Despite the uproar over the casting of Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, I thought he was perfect in the role. Really. I also have a girl crush on Jennifer Lawrence.
Also, if you haven't seen it, check out this blind item about the movie: http://www.crazydaysandnights.net/2012/03/todays-blind-items-hunger-games.html. Can't decide if it's for real or not (probably not), but it definitely colored how I saw things, since I had read it beforehand.

Re: Hunger Games Movie Discussion - spoilers
Me too. She is gorgeous and such a badass.
I saw it yesterday - I thought they did a great job! I was afraid that there would be too many characters and it would seem confusing for people who hadn't read the book (I had, though), and I wondered how they would explain all the rules of the game, etc. I liked that they made the gamemakers central characters to help explain all that. It added dimension to the movie that wasn't really necessary in the book.
I was pleasantly surprised by Josh Hutcherson. I had no idea who he was beforehand, and I'll be honest, I was hoping for some eye candy in that role. He didn't do it for me when I saw pics of him ahead of time, but I thought he was adorable in the movie. Definitely a teenage heartthrob, though.... he didn't look like he shaves yet. (Come to think of it - they were out there in the wilderness for a week or more - none of the guys who lasted to the end had facial hair. I know they were teenagers, but still...)
Overall, well done!
I just got home from seeing it. I thought it was really well done--true to the book but with enough new things to make it exciting. I enjoyed getting out of Katniss's head and getting to see some of what was happening in the Capitol during the games.
I'm still torn on Josh Hutcherson. He's a good actor and charismatic enough for the part (particularly in his introductory interview with Caesar) but he's too tiny for someone whose main advantage was his strength and physicality. I kept thinking that Katniss could squish him. Stanley Tucci was fabulous, and I wanna do nasty, nasty things with Lenny Kravitz. And the biggest shocker, I found Woody Harrelson effective and didn't hate him.
I'm super glad they shortened the dog part and cut the reference to them somehow being the mutant spirits of dead tributes. I found that part silly and unnecessary in the book. I was a little surprised there was never a conversation explaining why Peeta had been with the mean group trapping Katniss in the tree.
Was the implication that Seneca Crane was getting killed at the end? I hope not as I think he plays a small but pivotal role in Catching Fire.
I always hated the dog part in the book and I continued to hate it in the movie. Not that I expected them to cut it out, but I still can't stand it.
I thought a lot of the tributes looked much too small. I know they are supposed to be young, but if you're a career, for example, wouldn't you be more built?
Wow, I totally don't remember that. Thank you for the explanation, though!
I agree with PPs about the dogs, and I too am glad that they made that last part short and didn't make them the reincarnated spirits of the dead tributes. Weird.
Lenny Kravitz was awesome.
I was also quite impressed with Woody's performance. That isn't how I pictures Haymitch when I was reading, but it made sense. Lenny was freaking amazing, even in his small part - I loved the scenes with him and Katniss. Stanley Tucci was perfection.
I agree with Fallin as well that it was nice to see what was going on outside of just Katniss' perspective. I also thought it was interesting what they did with Seneca Crane - how he had this quietness and vulnerability about him, but then was sending fireballs and mutant dogs after the children with outright pleasure.
Yeah, Josh is a bit too small, but I still think he was the right choice. He captures Peeta's spirit and gentleness and charisma so well. I think the movie would have suffered if they had gone with someone bigger, but lacking in what Josh has.
I'm glad that they minimized the dogs, because the cgi was cheesy, and I didn't want to see more of that, but I think leaving out the dead tribute part was kind of a miss. I mean, yes that was cheesy too, but it showed how the capital engineered mutts to affect people on a psychological level. I feel like that's important later in the story.
Fallin, what happened with Seneca Crane in book two? In my mind, he was dead for that whole book. I was thinking that I really liked what they did with his character. The conversations that he had with Snow, as well as the berries at the end, helped to show that he was just as much a pawn in the games as any of the tributes.
I think they did a great job creating the world of panem, especially the capitol. I loved the costumes and makeup. I think my favorite scene was the chariot ride, because they just did such a great job with the fire suits.

ETA: I agree that showing that Seneca was as effed as everyone else was brilliant and one of the things I liked about it not being all from Katniss's POV. I also loved seeing the uprising in District 11 after Rue died. It's a nice setup for what's to come.
SPOILERS FOR BOOK TWO

It's been a long time since I read the books but isn't Seneca the one who dances with Katniss when the Capitol parades Peeta and her around, and he has a watch (I think? Or something) that has the Mockingjay symbol and she later realizes he's helping the rebellion. I think I assumed he helped engineer getting them out of the arena in the Hunger Games: All Stars Edition. I could be wrong.
No Fallin, I believe that that is the new Game Maker who comes after Seneca - Plutarch?
ETA: Another fun fact - did you know that the next movie isn't due to come out until November 2013? Blerg. If they do the four films (final book split in two) with that long between each release, that will be torture.
There is a new head gamemaker in the second book. In fact, I feel like the only mention of Seneca Crane in the second book was Katniss thinking who knows what Snow did to him after the games. So, I really liked his ending scene.
I agree, I loved the world outside of the games. I cried at the District 11 uprising scene after Rue's death. My husband, who didn't read the books, said that was one of his favorite scenes. I did kind of wish they would still send the bread to Katniss as a gift.
I also love Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss. But really, after reading the books, I saw Katniss a lot like the character she played in Winter's Bone.
One thing that bothered me was Peeta's camouflaging. I didn't picture it so elaborate in the book.
Ah, gotcha, that makes sense.
I cried when Katniss put the flowers on Rue and did the hand salute thing. I also cried when Gale scooped up Prim at the beginning.
Yeah, Peeta's camouflaging was laughably impossible, and yet very cool looking.

In the movie, I thought the camouflaging reminded me of Mystique from X-Men, which I guess was a good shoutout to Jennifer L.'s X-Men movie.
The best part of our screening was when Peeta and Katniss kissed for the first time, the scene flashed to Gale, and some kid made some really loud barfing noise. Cue all the 12-year-old girls giggling for three minutes.
This was my thought exactly.
Overall I really enjoyed it, but there were a couple of things that I wish they would have kept. Like the origin of the Mockingjay pin. I feel like that plays a part in the 2nd and 3rd books that really helps soften Katniss a little. It makes her feel more human, because she actually thinks about other people.
It's really unrealistic. Yeah, he's good in the books, but not /that/ good.
I pictured haymitch more a cross between like nick nolte for the burnout and Jeff bridges circa lebowski in gruff manner and portly size.
I really like getting out of katniss' perspective. I liked that the scenes of the districts felt different than the scenes of the Capitol and those felt different than the arena.
Kato definitely needed to be bigger. I thought the casting for the female tributes was pretty spot on. Rue was perfect.
Mucho likes purple nails and purple cupcakes
In the book, Katniss' father dies in the mines and her mother gets incapacitated by her depression over it and her family is practically starving. She went to the shops to rummage through their trash looking for scraps. Peeta overheard his mother yelling at her to stay away from their trash and he deliberately burned bread and said he was going to feed the pigs with it since they couldn't sell it. He then threw it to Katniss without anyone knowing.

Got it thanks!
