Best sports drink?

Best sports drink? I'm having issues keeping my electrolytes up after a run so I have started to drink 6 oz. of Gatorade after running but I'm wondering if Gatorade is the best choice.

Which sports drink do you drink?

Jaeger Run for PRIDE 5K - 6/15/2012 Cinco de Mayo - 5K - 5/5/2012 - 24:43 (7:59 pace) Hoover Hustle 10K - 4/15/2012 - 50:19 (8:07 pace) - 1st 10K! UltraFit St. Patrick's Day - 5K 3/17/2012 - 24:56 (8:03 pace) - 1st 5K! Turkey Trot 5 mile - 11/22/2011 - 42:34 (8:31 pace) - 1st race ever:) "Life is slippery, here, take my hand."

Re: Best sports drink?

  • Gatorade sits best with me. I've tried others--like Hammer Heed--and they are just gross IMO.
  • It's definitely a personal thing. It depends on what your stomach handles best and how you feel about drinking it. It's unfortunately a matter of trial and error. I'm the biggest fan of Powerade but I can deal with Gatorade (G2 clear is the best of that brand for me). Cytomax is narsty.

Have you considered replenishing your electrolytes during your workout as well?

  • Yeah, it's a personal preference. I taught myself to drink Gatorade on the run (since that is what most races have on the course), but I am trying out Nuun tablets (provide electrolytes, no sugar, and dissolve in plain water) on the run and flavored coconut water (it's an acquired taste ... choc is my favorite flavor) or chocolate milk as a recovery drink).

  • I don't bring anything with me on my runs - I only run between 4 - 6 miles on my runs and normally haven't needed fluids but I know with the hotter temps coming I might start thinking of getting a fule belt.

  • Gatorade. I guess Powerade is basically the same thing. Cytomax and other drinks make my stomach feel awful.

Lately, I've been taking single serve salt packets with water during a long run and I feel pretty good with that.

  • i like Nunn - like pp said no sugar - which i think is what makes other sports drinks sit heavy in my stomach and make me feel yucky.  I also like the tablets - they are easy to store and make when i am out on the trial/road.
  • Definitely a personal preference thing.  I try to only drink lemon-lime gatorade.  I have found that lemon lime gatorade tastes really good when my electrolytes are low, but really awful when they aren't.  So I can better optimize my replacement of electrolytes.  I find I can easily over drink (read: too many extra calories) with the other flavors.
