If you could move anywhere...

If you could move anywhere and not have to worry about employment or how much you spend, where would you go?

I'd move to the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. DH would hate me for how much time I'd spend skiing (time to learn and quit complaining, buddy!) but he'd have an easier time communicating than he would in my hometown. The only thing that would scare me are the avalanches.

Re: If you could move anywhere...

  • It's so hard to separate practicalities from desires at this point. I'm so caught up in the logistics of jobs, schools for DD, quality of life v. job satisfaction that it's hard to think of somewhere I would just go where it wouldn't matter if the schools suuuucked or the jobs suuuucked or it was really safe, etc.

Anyway, I think I'd say Rio de Janeiro. I lived there for a summer before DD was born and loved it. But I have no idea if it would be as fun living there "for real." I was doing an internship and once the workday was done, I had zero responsibilities but to hang out with the other people I was there with from my grad school. The food was great, the people were awesome, the music and sunshine made me happy, the pace of life was really manageable and I love speaking Portuguese.

  • Not counting my dream of owning an apartment on the cruise ship The World, I would split my time and winter in Adelaide, SA and St. John's, Newfoundland.

Of all the places I have visited, they are the ones I could see myself living most comfortably.

  • Newfoundland? Wow! Coming from New Orleans, why Saint John's?

(Disclaimer: I lived in NB for four years and am dying to go back to Maritime Canada.)

Hmm...seems to be a theme building here. DH and both thought that we might enjoy living in Halifax. Never been. But have a good feeling about it.

  • I'd move into our new place NOW instead of waiting another month! lol, just kidding, but it's hard to say, we're so happy here.

If I didn't have to worry financially and had no career ambitions I'd be on the move constantly, touring the world. I'd do the cruise ship that dorothy mentioned, do all Orient Express tours, I'd rest in Southern California for a few weeks, have a pied ? terre in Paris and tour France (but only in the summer), spend time at my favorite resort in Vegas, volunteer in Africa, and so on and on and on.

I would loooove to do a short-term assignment in Antarctica, but I think I'm too big a wuss for one of the smaller stations.

  • I would love to wander the world, but if I had to pick one... actually, that's really hard! Total fantasy, somewhere in Italy with a roof terrace, maybe Florence, I really liked it there. And I would absolutely love to live anywhere with a bit of sun right now, Scotland is overwhelming sometimes.

I know it's so crazy different from NOLA, but I really got an "I could live here happily feel when I was there.  It was beautiful and friendly and I really enjoyed it.

I enjoy visiting Halifax and Charlottetown, PEI, but St. John's really felt like a place that could be home.

  • I would split my time between Australia and Thailand with frequent trips to Japan and New Zealand for Skiing (because I would still be counting my pennies regardless of the amount of money I have).

  • I'd probably be a wanderer. I'd love to split my time between the States and somewhere in Rome or Tuscany.

  • Vancouver would be awsome, or somewhere in Japan.  Maybe Thailand also.  Honestly, I have no idea...I sometimes doubt we'll ever settle somewhere permanently.  I feel like we'll always be a bit nomadic.

  • I'm mostly a luker but I thought I'd chime in. Hope that's ok.

For me, I'd love to live in Cape Town.  I spent a few weeks there last summer, and I felt instantly at home.  I'd been there a week or so and remember thinking "I'm home." I've never felt like that before.  I can't wait to go back.

That's brilliant! I love that feeling.
