Makeup counter question-Do I need an appt?

I don't live near a BB makeup counter, but when I get to one, I like to try new shadows, blush, lip colors, etc. to see what new products/colors I like on me before I buy.  The last few times I went to Sephora, I needed to schedule an appt (and they charge now, too?).  At the makeup counter at Macys, the lady almost seemed put out that I wanted to have a consultation (it wasn't really that busy, until she starts applying makeup, then everyone wanted to ask her a question and the phone wouldn't stop ringing).  Do I need an appointment or can I just go up and ask for a consultation at that time?

  • You don't need one, but it makes it a lot easier on you and the consultant if you make one.

  • No you don't, but also be willing to spend some in merchandise.
  • I have found certain counters are more welcoming to walk ins..Bobbi Brown is one I never had an issue with. I also bought $100 worth of product too.

As much as I love Clinique stuff, I found they are not as welcoming to walk ins, but I suspect they makd more money on skincard versus makeup. I could be wrong.

If it bothers you, make an appointment :)

  • It can be very hit or miss. I suspect it has more to do with the actual saleperson and the day of the week than the counter itself (unless the brand really pushes them to be friendly and whatnot).

I'd make an appt at Sephora, for sure, and if you want help on the weekends anywhere. The make-up consultant at Sephora actually did help my mom when she and I went in on a Saturday once but they were unexpectedly slow, she didn't have any appts for that time and my mom had already made some selections and was having trouble deciding (she wanted an eyeshadow pallete but wasn't sure how to use the colors together). So, hit or miss with them.

Either way, each counter has a minimum purchase required with most consultations. It's not really a fee, though some will charge you the difference if you don't spend the minimum on product.

  • If you don't make an appointment, I would suggest going early morning or mid-afternoon in the middle of the week.  I've even popped in to some counters during my lunch breaks and gotten my eyes done quick.

Also, I always buy the makeup (at least the eyes) they put on me unless it looks terrible (which has never happened).
