Does anyone rely on the Wii Fit for their workouts?

I'm thinking about purchasing the game console along with the accessories?  Does it really work?  Is it worth it?  Since having two kids, it's become extremely difficult to get to a gym.  When I did go to the gym, I loved taking classes, so I thought that this might be a great substitution.  Tia!

  • I think spending an hour Wii Fit is certainly better than an hour just sitting in front of the tv, but it really doesn't do a lot to get your heart rate up. Some of the dance games on Wii actually get me sweating, so they might be a better option.

  • If you play some frustrating games you may get your heart rate up...  Other than that, it would probably just be better to invest in a jump rope and some dumbbells.
  • If the weather is bad and I can't get to the gym, I will do my workout on the Wii Fit.  They have a "running in place" thing that I will do for 30 minutes.  Not nearly as good of a workout as a real run, but it is decent.  The others don't really do a good job at getting the heart rate up.  The strength training is pretty good though.  Although, it would probably get boring if that was the only thing you were doing.  I would recommend getting some of the other games (dancing, skiing, tennis, etc) to mix it up a bit.

  • It's a good game to get off the couch, but not one I would recommend to replace going to the gym. None of the games can really get your HR up.

  • I like the strength and yoga parts of the Wii Fit, but the aerobic exercises aren't really that great.  The strength does make me sore, so it seems to work, but if you're looking to burn calories, it's probably not the best game.

  • Thanks ladies!  I was looking into the dance games also.  I love to dance and I'm sure my daughter would get into it too.  I'm just doing well eating wise, but I'd like to tone up a bit.  Fortunately, I have good muscle tone, so the little bit that I do with weights does work.  On my days off and when the weather is nice, I do take the kids for a long walk in our town.  It's just not the same as going to the gym...
