I have a coworker who used to work at another company for years and knows everyone there. She talks all the time about how terrible it was, very political and people were worked until they broke down. She still has friends there and tells me gossip about their turnover and drama.
I saw that they are hiring and I know they pay twice what I make now. The coworker is kind of nutty so I'm hoping her experience was kind of in her head. She's a total perfectionist that will freak out over details that are silly, so maybe she thinks any job is really hard. I also don't like my job now, so maybe it can't be any worse?
I was thinking of applying, and hopefully in the interview I will get a feel for what the culture is really like. I have been totally off about trying to judge a company based on the HR department before (like where I am now). When I interviewed for my current job my boss seemed really nice, which she can be when she isn't under any stress at all, which is almost never. Otherwise things get really bad.
I was wondering how people can tell if a company is a place where you will be happy. Do you try to figure out the culture or do you just look at the job description and salary and hope for the best?
Re: How do you know you will like a company?
My concern would be the truth behind the turnover. There has to be some reason for it considering they seem to pay well.
Otherwise, I know during an interview if I will like a company. Prior to my current job I went on about 3-5 interview. I knew immediately that one was not for me and the others I knew by the end of the interview that I could do the job and get by and generally be happy but that I would be more happy elsewhere for the long term. When I went on the interview for my current job I could see exactly what I was getting into, the expectations and I knew I wanted the job and that it was somewhere I felt I would fit in and be comfortable.
That's the weird thing. They don't have a website and aren't on glassdoor or linkedin. I think the company has about 50 employees that are mostly older, so maybe they just aren't linkedin kind of people. I don't know anyone else who has worked there. Hopefully I'll get an interview and get a feel for what they are like.
Thanks everyone.
