What's your favorite way...

to cook a whole chicken? I'm thinking crockpot but I'm not really sure the best way to do it. Recipes? Ideas? TIA.

  • I love oven roasted chicken or rotisserie chicken...you can do that on the grill if you get the right attachment.

  • Purchasing it roasted for $5 at Costco Big Smile

It's about the only thing I prefer to buy prepared.  They just do such a good job, and I so rarely eat chicken.  It's not worth my time perfecting it when the cost is about the same.

  • I like to inject mine with the creole butter, and top it with cajun seasoning.  Then bake it in the oven.  I can eat it for days yummmmm!

  • Thanks ladies!

Sibil, E loves the Costco ones but I'm really trying to do as much as we can at home, and he has class 3 nights a week so if I do one at home one night he can have it in different capacities through out the week for lunches and dinners.

Tell me more Lemon. What all do you put in with it? Do you make stock from it after?

  • I love rotisserie but I always buy it. Other then that I oven roast mine with some sliced garlic cloves, 2 lemons, and fresh rosemary... its the only recipe I've used because no one complains when I make it. When DH is home I'll experiment with different recipes, since he attempts to cook when he's here and makes me eat it :-/. I appreciate his effort though.

Maybe it's just b/c I was vegetarian for years, but a Costco roast chicken lasts me about a week.  I get sick of it.  We have chicken with a side, chicken with rice, chicken/rice soup.  And on top of that I boil the carcass for broth.  I just can't imagine it not lasting for 3 dinners.  It lasts for so long that I only buy a chicken once every couple months.

  • We just bought one of those infrared oil less turkey fryers....and its amazing!!! we just cooked a chicken on it, using the beer can method, and I made my own marinade to put on it.  It was delish...

Yup, I always throw some lemon, garlic and herbs in the cavity, s&p the skin with a little butter or oil and roast. But nothing beats Sam's Club rotisserie...

  • I've done crock pot (for a whole chicken), but I think we prefer an oven roasted chicken.  It's not hard to oven roast, but you can't leave it and ignore it like you can with a crock pot.

I think oven roasted makes for a much richer stock from the leftovers, too.  (yes, I am that much of a food geek - I make stock from the carcass of any bone-in meat that we cook, and then make yummy soup/stew with it - great use for some of the leftover meat, too)
