high tension power lines
Would you not consider a neighborhood because there are high tension power lines that run through it? The house we'll be looking at is 2 or 3 streets over from the rows of power lines. You won't be able to see the power line structures from the house, so from that standpoint I'm not concerned. But, I'm not sure if power lines are contributed to cancer rates especially in children. It seems hard to find solid evidence regarding it.

I've done that research on high tension wires and research on cell phone towers and there are agruments leaning both ways.
What I DO know for a fact is that all electricity gives off radiation. Even our alarm clocks, plugged into the walls, using that electric current, give radiation off. So, how many alarm clocks would you need to add up to the equivalent of high tension wires? A lot. And, that woudl be a lot of radiation.
There was a girl I knew who had some tool that measured radiation that she borrowed from her dad's place of work. They used to live right near high tension wires and her mom developed breast cancer. She went and measured the output with her tool. Apparently the levels were really high. But, perhaps not high enough to alert the governmental authorities...but we can always trust them anyways...
Now, I know that cancer can be caused by many things, and also genetics can play a role, so I'm not outrightly claiming that the electricity caused the cancer. But living your life next to things that put off so much radiation cannot be good for the long term.
Also, most people won't live near them either so you will probably have a hard time reselling if you ever have to go that route.
I grew up in a house that backed up to a meadow containing power lines. We moved when I was in junior high, but as far as we are aware of, none of the neighbors we kept in contact with had any issues with cancer. One thing my mom likes to comment about is the fact that all of the kids who's houses back up to the power lines were in the talented and gifted classes at school.
I wouldn't have any problem moving to a house with power lines in the neighborhood. Then again, our current house backs up to a highway.
The house we made an offer on had power lines in the back yard. They were not the high tension lines but transmission lines which are larger than just normal power lines. I spoke to a gentleman at our local power company and he was able to provide me with information on how many kilowatts the lines was putting out. I was then able to research the exact amount. I also spoke to our home inspector who suggested he is normally only concerned if the lines are directly over the house. If they are in the back yard or many streets away then the concern isn't as high.
As a PP said though, its really personal decision. Some people would never live by power lines, others wouldn't care. My MIL made a good point though that if it bothers you, you can beat that when you go to sell it will bother other people too.
