Hickam AFB Reviews

Hi ya'll! I'm Sarah and I'm new to the site. My husband is in the Air Force and we are moving from Vandenberg AFB to FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY in May. Before we get there though, we are going to try to take our very first hop to Hickam AFB in Hawaii! We're really excited, but we want to make this trip as cheap as possible. We were planning on just staying at Hickam for most of the days, but from the reviews I've read, it sounds like the lodging isn't very good. ie. bugs, dirty, doors don't close, etc. I was hoping to get some more opinions on the place and if it is as bad as it sounds, does anyone have any other suggestions? We've looked at staying in the Cabanas on the Marine base as well. Any thoughts or opinions on those? Thanks for your help and I'm so excited to meet you!

  • Have you tried looking into Hale Koa? It's only for Military. Link

  • Did you check out the Hale Koa?  It's right on the beach in Waikiki and I love it.  I have stayed at the Navy Lodge on Pearl Harbor and it is ok, but for about 15 dollars more I would rather stay at the Hale Koa.

  • I did look in to that and the cheapest we can get it for would be $113/night. I know that's not bad, but my husband wants to go on a cruise this fall before we have a baby, so we are trying to make this trip literally as cheap as possible. I've heard great things about it though, so I will keep it in mind!
  • Is the Navy Lodge on Pearl Harbor the same lodging they use at Hickam? I read that they are a joint base, so I'm not sure how that works.
  • If you literally want it cheap there's a ymca across from ala moana. I stayed there when apt hunting. There are also hostels in waikiki. I'd rather do that than stay on base just for proximity.

  • I think Hickam has its own lodge, but I have not stayed there and don't know anything about it.  We also stayed at the Arizona Hall which is on Pearl Harbor and it was around $40 a night.  I don't know what the restrictions on staying there are, but we stayed there before we could move into our house to save some money.  I wouldn't recommend it unless you really can't afford anything else or don't plan on spending much time in the room.
  • We are at Hickam, but I have no clue about the lodging here. Look into the little cabins on Bellows Beach too, I think they're pretty reasonable. (Although if the whole bugs, dirt thing creeps you out then maybe not...but it's Hawaii, bugs come with the territory)

  • I don't know why I responded over on the travel board, but I got my Oahu posts confused.

I just saw them advertise a rate for $89.  I've stayed at aqua resorts, and they're nice and clean.  This one in particular won't have a pool or view, but it's just a block from the beach, on the diamond head end of waikiki  (which makes it a little quieter, close to kapiolani park and the zoo).

  • We couldn't ever get into the Hale Koa. If we could have gotten a room, I think that would have been better. We ended up staying at the Navy Lodge in Pearl Harbor and I thought it was ok.
