2) Hawaii... Maui? Kauai? Honolulu?

Hawaii is at the top of our (my) list for a babymoon.  I know next to nothing about Hawaii as far as the differences between the islands.  We're looking for something beautiful but low-key and not too crowded.  I know pretty much anywhere we can stay (Starwood) will be touristy, but want some semi-authentic experiences and AMAZING FOOD as well.  And some stuff to do if we get tired of the beach that doesn't involve golf or anything too crazy adventurous for a 28-29 week pregnant lady.

  • Sorry! I scrolled through the first 4 pages or so and didn't see the post on this first page about islands!  But if anyone has anything to add based on my questions, I'd appreciate it!  TIA!

  • Just out of curiosity, what's your definition of "authentic"?

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

To be honest, I have no idea!  I've been to places (London, NYC, Italy) where the streets of the main attractions are just lined with tourist, gift shops, and bad/expensive food.  My goal when I travel is to get away from those high traffic, congested areas and experience things that locals or travelers-in-the-know love.  Cool markets, awesome foodie-approved restaurants (dives, fancy-shmancy, and anywhere in between welcome), quieter beaches, peaceful hiking trails, maybe even a little bit of history.  But neither of us have ever been to Hawaii, or anywhere tropical and exotic for that matter, so we're probably up for a little bit of the clich? as well.

  • We stayed several places during out last stay there but the Sheraton Maui was far and away our favorite.

The service was incredible and, I think, one of the best locations on the big island. It's not as posh as other Starwood properties but was still my fav. You can literally walk out of your room, past the pools and to one of the best snorkel spots on the island and the conceirge saved us tons by recommending certain excursions. And there's a fairly large onsite rental for kayaking, scuba gear, etc.

The only two down sides for me were:

    1. Only one hot tub - I'm guessing not an issue since it's a babymoon.

    2. Pretty lousy bar food. I mean, I don't expect great food, but the poolside grill was bad. However, you're very close (easy walk on the beach) to Whaler's Village with tons of quick, cheap eats (mostly chain) or good local restaurants.

Plus it's a quick drive to Lahaini. It has a good deal of cheap, crappy tourist shops but also some great stuff in the mix.

If you're committed to Starwood I'd skip Honolulu as it'll probably be more congested/crowded/etc. than what you'd like. Didn't make it to Kauai but have heard wonderful things.

  • We recently went to Maui and Kauai, I think from what you describe Kauai might be a good fit.  We stayed at the st. Regis which I don't recommend, but there is also a Weston on the north shore that seemed nice.

The north shore in general I thought had some great activities like kayaking, snorkeling, and beaches, and the island is easy to get around if you wanted to spend a couple days driving it.  I found the food on the north shore to be pretty good, there wasn't much "touristy stuff" but there were a lot of great family owned places to eat both dive-y and slightly more upscale.

There is a Hawaii post on my blog linked below for some of our impressions of the restaurants and each island.

  • Kauai is low key but I also feel that you need to be quite active to enjoy it.  It offers some of the best hiking and kayaking in HI.  Plus, you can only see the Kaanapali coast from boat or air or the long hike.  Not quite the thing if you are pg.  I will also say that the island is small and the food is underwhelming in terms of variety and quality.
  • Maui.

I prefer Kauai but if you want amazing food and something not crazy busy, go to Maui. The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is supposed to be nice and pretty reasonably priced. The other concern I'd have about Kauai is that the best place to stay, IMO (the north shore), is pretty far from the regional hospital. I'd want to be a bit closer while pg.

  • I'd say The Westin Princeville in Kauai or The Westin Maui - our two fave islands, you can't go wrong IMO:)

Kauai is the epitome of paradise, especially on the North Shore, so many beautiful beaches (many are uncrowded & super relaxing) and gorgeous scenery.  There are some great places to eat at and cute shops to check out.  Lots of great hiking trails as well.

Maui is more "commercialized" but has alot going on there.  Beautiful beaches, shopping, eating, and scenic drives and hikes.  Lahaina is a cool historic town with lots of authenticity...

If you'd like recs for either place, let me know :)

  • If you want "authentic" - definitely go to the North Shore of Oahu. Honolulu is nice and all, but very very touristy. Spend a day or two max there, and then rent a car and go to the North Shore. Turtle Bay resort is phenomenal and I ate the best street food there ever. There's a little food truck off the main road where we ate the best, freshest Crab Melt ever.... so good my mouth is watering. And it's mostly untouched. The beaches are gorgeous.
