Running shorts that won't ride up on my giant thighs

and are also not crazy expensive (i.e. not Lulu).

It would be nice to spend $20 or so and not have to pull them out of my buttcrack every 3 steps. Normally I run in capris, but they're just so warm.

Any suggestions?

Re: Running shorts that won't ride up on my giant thighs

  • I got some Nike ones @ Kohls, I waited till I had 20-30% off & they weren't that expensive. I tried other/less expensive brands, but for my size/build, Nike works the best for me.

  • Nike Pro 5" Shorts are compression shorts that are super thin and won't ride up because they're compression style

I have short eater thighs too and I have a pair of Nike Tempo shorts that I wear on occasion.  They do ride up a bit, but not all the way. So my thighs still touch and I have to use body glide, but they don't immediately just go north to my crotch and set up camp.

  • Now I'm trying to decide if I'm willing to go out in public in compression shorts. For some reason compression tights don't really bother me, but shorts seem just a little too close to pantslessness.

Maybe I'll try a pair on, as that does seem to be the most obvious solution.

  • I'll post a race picture of me in compression shorts if that will help you.  It ain't pretty, but it gets the job done.  It seems pointless to put regular shorts on top of them since those just immediately bunch on top of the compression shorts, but it would be a bit extra modesty.
  • Well, even if I feel a little awkward in them it's certainly better than running around looking like my butt is trying to eat my shorts.

  • LOL at "short eater thighs!". That must be what I have, too! My thighs are super muscular, and anything loose just bunches up.

Compression is the way to go...I just make sure I get tunic length tops (usually from the yoga section of the store) to be sure there's no camel toe action.

That's a good idea, I should invest in some long tops.

the top I'm wearing in those pictures is a little longer than I normally wear (it's an Under Armor shirt) and the only problem with it is that I will dump water on my back when it's hot.  Over the course of anything longer than a 5K, that causes the shirt to really stretch out.  It had grown several inches in length by the end of that half marathon.  If it's longer and not a stretchy fabric, that wouldn't be such an issue, but long cut + stretchy * sweat = growth.

  • Ok, I'm only 5'3".

I think I can live with that, given a long enough shirt. Thanks!

  • And yes, my legs are pretty much exactly like yours. haha

oh good, I'm glad that helped!  The Nike ones are much  much thinner than the Saucony ones I wear but I feel the thickness of the Saucony ones helps hide any camel toe action that might occur.  What I hate most about them isn't the public display of my goodies that might occur, but rather, since they are compression, the spare tire it creates around my middle from compression my stomach up and out.  But, I'd rather have some extra flab displayed than run in anything that covers my knees in the heat we have here.

    Pick your battles, right?

  • Yes! That is the major problem with compression bottoms. If only they'd add like an inch of extra material at the top so I could tuck my belly into it.

  • I love THESE from Old Navy.  I have larger thighs, and they have yet to ride up.

It's a 9" inseam, which means they're closer to knee length (and I"m 5'4"), but they do have shorter inseams.

The best part?  They're cheap.  On sale right now for $15 a pair.

  • I wear compression shorts too.  I think mine are 6" and are RoadRunners.  I refuse to wear shorts now.  They are long enough I don't feel like I'm showing the world the less attractive parts of my thighs.  LOL

  • I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I just wear compression shorts under regular running shorts. That keeps them from bunching and gives me a little more thigh coverage since running shorts are generally 3-4" long and I'm not comfortable yet with that length.

  • I love wearing compression shorts because my ass doesnt eat my shorts and i can put on some body glide where my thighs touch and it isnt an issue. All other shorts just look odd on me because of where I carry my weight, like they sag in the front and its just not cool. I will usually wear the lulu wannabe tanks from costco because I am short and they cover any sort of camel toe action that may be going on.

Man. Look at the lady in grey wearing sweat pants behind you. That just looks uncomfortable.

  • +1 to the compression shorts

(Another bonus, I've never gotten the butt-chafing that's often mentioned around here either)

I have 5 pairs of ancient Adidas compression shorts (seriously, I've had them since the late 90's) I think I'll have to check out the Saucony ones Kat mentioned. I haven't been able to find any I love as much the the Adidas ones I have.

  • if you don't like the shorts solo, I have a great running skirt that has long compression shorts under a running skirts. They're 4-5" shorts. The skirt is Moving Comfort and it was only $45 or so plus I got it on sale on top of that. It's worth every cent. My only complaint is that it only comes in gray and I want black too.
