Mercer Island Half (10K race) recap. PR!

The day was gorgeous and the course was hilly!  Over 400 ft of elevation gain in just 6 miles with an uphill (mostly) finish - oof!  I managed the hills pretty well for the first 3.5 miles, but did need a couple of short walk breaks on two of the later uphill stretches.  I managed a PR by about 2 minutes, which I am happy about, but was hoping for something in the 55: range.  My garmin registered 56:30, but the race clock read 56:05 or so when I crossed, so with luck I'll end up revising my time downward :) I think it might have lost satellite reception for a while since I also recorded the course as slightly short.

We stayed long enough to watch the half marathon winners - and saw a colleague cruise through at just shy of 1:25:00. Not only is he an awesome runner, he's super nice and a BRILLIANT scientist. Inspiring!

The race is known for being very well organized and it did not disappoint.  Registration, parking, and spectating were all very smooth given that it's a large race (~4000 people) on a small island.  There was great swag, a "survivors" room for colon cancer survivors (the race benefits colon cancer research), and just a great feel.

Sam and DH tracked me down around 2.5 miles in and it was such a great feeling to see Sam's beaming face as I approached!  It was less awesome to hear him wailing when I didn't stop :(  But he was there at the finish and a really good sport for having to be up super early and carted out to watch mommy race. The free Odwalla juice boxes have him bouncing off the walls now, but hey - it's a special occasion :)

I'm thinking of another 10K or two this summer, and maybe a nice FLAT half in August or September too.

Joenali, how was your half??
